Introduction
What is the Main Idea?
Main idea is the author's message about the topic. It is often expressed directly or it can be implied.
Standard: Explain the central/main idea(s) of a text and cite evidence of its development; summarize the text.
Task
Students will be able to analyze a piece of non-fiction to identify the main idea and supporting details.
Process
Students will create a graphic organizer that breaks down:
Topic, Topic Sentence, Main Idea and Supporting details
After reading the passage students will underline the topic, circle the topic sentence, highlight the main idea and the supporting details that show textual evidence when discussing the authors message.
Evaluation
After modeling how the students should look for the topic and main ideas in the passages students will work independently on a worksheet of different passages. After underlining, circling and highlighting the topic and main ideas students will explain using the supporting details to support their ideas about how they came to the conclusion and what is the authors message.
