Main Idea Detectives

Introduction

Have you ever read a passage and thought, “What is this mostly about?” 📚 That’s exactly what good readers ask themselves! In this WebQuest, you will become a Main Idea Detective. Your job is to read carefully, look for clues, and figure out the main idea and supporting details of different texts.

In this lesson, you will learn how to identify the main idea of a text and find the supporting details that explain it. This is a new skill we are learning to help you better understand what you read. By the end of this WebQuest, you will be able to explain what a text is mostly about and prove your thinking using details from the text.

Task

Your task is to read short informational texts, identify the main idea and supporting details, and complete a graphic organizer. You will also show what you learned by completing an online review activity and a short written response.

By the end of this WebQuest, you will:

  • Identify the main idea of a text

  • Find at least three supporting details

  • Explain how details support the main idea
