Exponents & Scientific Notation

There are a variety of ways to write numbers using symbols and exponents.  This webquest will help you understand why we use these symbols and expoents to write numbers in scientific notation.  You will gain insight into a Scientific Notation, as well as postive and negative exponents!! 

Your job is to work with a partber to use this webquest to complete a series of activities.  You need to answer all of the required questions and participate in all assigned games.  All requested answers need must be written on the provided answer sheet by EACH student.

Read about Negative Exponents on the provided website the complete the 10 questions at the bottom of the page on the provided worksheet.

Activity 5: Watch the following video: How to Write Large Numbers in Scientific Notation

Browse the internet for the following information.

• The population of New Jersey.
• The Speed of Light.
• The number of cells in the human body.
• The amount of money a celebrity paid for his/her house.
• The total amount of money a person won playing the lottery.

Write these numbers in scientific notation on the provided worksheet.  

Answer the following question:  Explain/Describe what steps were taken to change the number from standard form to scientific notation.

Activity 6:  

Watch the following video: How to Write Small Numbers in Scientific Notation

List the following numbers in order from least to greatest then write the numbers in scientific notation.  

After you write the numbers in scientific notation, write three TRUE inequalities on the provided worksheet.  Watch the following videos to help you compare!

Activity 7:  Using the provided websites, look up the distance from each planet to the sun (Use the average distance for each).  Write these numbers in standard from and scientific notation then order them from least to greatest on the provided worksheet.

Activity 8:   Go to the "Converting Large Numbers" website (link below). Answer as many as you can in 60 seconds and record your score on the activity sheet.

Activity 9:  Go to the "Converting Small Numbers" website. Answer as many as you can in 60 seconds and record your score on the activity sheet.

The webquest will be graded as a project.
