Mrs A's Wonderful Webquest - - - Current Events February 2015

Introduction

It is important, as a Citizen of the World, to be up-to-date in your knowledge of current events!  It is hard work to stay informed of issues around the globe, but it is crucial to pay attention to the world around you.  There are important events happening everyday, locally, nationally and internationally, and if you know what is happening, then you can begin to formulate informed opinions on these topics.

Today, you will be exploring news websites with a partner or alone.  Your task will be to identify a current event (happening LOCALLY, NATIONALLY, or INTERNATIONALLY), summarize what you can learn about this event on the Whiteboard in your Breakout Room.  If you still have time, you can also choose one of the political cartoons provided, and attempt to analyse this as well.

You will be sharing your current event (and possibly your cartoon) with the group.

Time-management will be a challenge for this assignment, as we need to be sharing our work for the last 30 minutes of class.

Task

TASK:

1) RESEARCH

Using the weblinks provided (I have selected some reputable news sources for you), research a news story that you are interested in.  (FIFTEEN MINUTES)

2) SUMMARIZE

Summarize the story on the Whiteboard in your Breakout Room.  You could write your summary in paragraph form, or you could organize a list using Who/What/When/Where/Why.  Your prurpose is to explain the event to your classmates who may not have any previous knowledge, so keep it basic. (TEN MINUTES)

3) POLITICAL CARTOON (If time)

Choose one of the cartoons provided and try to figure out what the cartoonist is trying to communicate to the audience.  If necessary, research the issue using the news sources provided.  Copy and Paste your chosen cartoon onto the Whiteboard.

4) Get prepared to share your work with the group.  If you don't have a microphone, make sure you write down everything you want to say on your Whiteboard!  Hopefully we will have 20-25 minutes to share our work with each other.

Process

Quickly scan these news websites and choose a story that is interesting to you.  Don't spend much time making your choice, as you need to spend your time researching your story!  You will need to do as much research on your story as needed to summarize the event/s for the group.
