Introduction
The Professional school counselor will introduce the activity “Discover the Similarities: Professional Sports” activity. Each student will choose (or will be assigned if a student does not know what profession to seek) a career from Power to Learn School to Career - Inside View: NY Liberty site, found at http://www.powertolearn.com/school_to_career/liberty/index.shtm.
Task
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the similarities of their daily schedule, processes and procedures and those used at work.
Process
Students will take 10-15 minutes to explore the website http://www.powertolearn.com/school_to_career/liberty/index.shtm. . Career titles include communication coordinator, TV Director, marketing manager etc. Students will read career profiles to learn what type of skills they should posses, majors to enroll while in college, if professionals intern at a site, what the professional had to do to achieve in their career and other aspects of that particular career. Students can utilize other websites, depending on the profession they chose. Students will become knowledgeable about their chosen career and conduct further research if needed. Students will learn about a typical day on the job: hours, specific tasks done every day, who they work with, who they report to, work environment, where or when they eat lunch, technology used and even what they like and dislike about their daily routine. Students will construct a display and report to the class on the similarities discovered about students’ average day. Students will have 15 minutes to create a bulletin board, flyer or poster on their career choice and will present it to the group.
Evaluation
Evaluation: The activity will be evaluated based on students’ presentations and bulletin board. Students will verbally describe the profession they researched or might be interested in, credentials or major needed to achieve the career, what that person does on an average day and how the student average day might be similar to a professional based on their career choice. Student poems will be posted throughout the classroom to enhance students’ college/career awareness throughout the school year.
