Enquiring Minds Want To Know

Introduction

Scientific Enquiry sounds like a big word but actually what it means is to seek information by asking questions. How many times have you asked interesting questions in your life to find information that you didn't already know? "Can I dig a hole to China?" or "What will happen if I put Mentos Candy in a bottle of Coke?" Asking these sort of questions help us find answers or solutions and are the basis of what Science is about. Science is a way for the world to find answers to all sort of questions and in the science world we use what is called the Scientific Method. Get ready to be a scientist, get ready to learn all about how fun finding answers to questions using Scientific Enquiry can be!

Objectives:

1. My objective is to define all components to the Scientific Method.

2. My objective is to research the Scientific Method in order to identify the main idea of what it is.

3. My objective is to work with a partner to create a poster using all the information we compiled and present it to the class.

Task

This unit will develop your understanding of the scientific method. In order to do well in this webquest you must read ALL directions!

All students will fill out a KWL Chart, 2 Graphic Organizers or what I like to call G.O.'s, and create a poster about the Scientific Method. Day 3  will require partner work, all partners will be assigned by your teacher.

At the end of this unit, you will finish your KWL chart and turn everything in to me so that I can give you a grade. Remember in this class we shoot for A's because A stands for AWESOME WORK!!!

Do your best work!

Process

Anticipatory Set- What do you know about the Scientific Method? Fill out the KWL Chart to start the lesson. Under the "What I know" Column- list everything you know about the Scientific Method. Under the "What I want to know" Column- list all the things you want to learn regarding the Scientific Method. On the last column, save it for the end of this unit. You will list all the things you learned after we completed this unit. This chart will help you identify the things you learned during this unit. Are you ready? Get set.......GO!!!

Day 1 and 2- Today you will learn the definitions of key terms used in the scientific method. You will be given a graphic organizer to help you with the terms and must fill it out using complete sentences. You must find 3 different websites that define all the terms. Write each definition you found on the graphic organizer or what I like to call the G.O., and then reread each term to write your own main idea of what the definition means. Make sure and write down each website you get your information from. The first one is a freebie, click here for your first definitions. http://www.sciencebuddies.org/science-fair-projects/project_scientific_method.shtml#overviewofthescientificmethod

EXTRA CREDIT- Find 3 vocabulary words and thier definitions related to scientific method and write them down on a piece of paper.

Day 3 and 4- Finish up your definitions graphic organizer and find a partner. Today you and a partner are going to search internet resources (websites, videos, etc.) to find more information about the Scientific Method. Answer the questions on your Day 3 Graphic Organizer with your partner in order to prepare yourself for the next lesson. Use as many sites as you can to help you answer the questions but make sure and write down the sites for citation. One student will be the recorder (fills out the organizer and writes down citations), the other will be the researcher (looks for websites). Here is another freebie, click here to find some awesome facts about the scientific method. http://www.factmonster.com/cig/science-fair-projects/understanding-using-scientific-method.html

Day 5 and 6Finish up Day 3's G.O. Today you and your partner will gather all your information and create a Scientific Enquiry Poster. Your poster must have all components of the scientific method and must be awesome! Use interesting facts and quotes, draw pictures, use scientific vocabulary and definitions, use examples of questions and tests in history. Your poster will be graded on you and your partners understanding of the main idea of the scientific method, the neatness of the poster work, and in the effort you put into it. Extra credit will be given to all teams who present their posters to the class.
