Introduction
Hello Students,
This 'Webquest' was created to allow you and your peers to do self study and become independent students with the goal of having student-centred classrooms. The topic is Grid 'References' and your task is based on the concept you have learnt earlier in the lesson i.e locating places using four and six figure grid references so basically its practical activities.
What are 'Grid References?'
Grid References are one way in which we can locate places or things on a map. There are two types of Grid References namely, four or six figure grid references, When writing grid references we always use places the Eastings first followed by the Northings. If its written the other way it is deem incorrect.
Task
Create a Grid (15x15)cm. Number the Eastings and Northings. Place 10 points at different places and identify them using 4 & 6 figure grid references.
Process
Step 1. Using a graph paper construct a grid 15x15cm.
Step 2. Each grid should be 3cm in size
Step 3. Number the Eastings from 10 and continue counting in 10s (10, 20, 30...)
Step 4. Number the Northings from 15 and continue counting in 15s (15, 30, 45...)
Step 5. Please 10 random points around the grid square.
Step 6. Write down the Four and Six Figure Grid Reference of each points placed at Step 5.
Evaluation
The grid construction must be accurate (15x15)cm
The Eastings are the vertical lines and numbered in 10s, (10, 20 ,30...)increasing towards the East.
The Northings are the horizontal lines and increases towards the North, numberings in 15s (15, 30, 45 ....)
The 4 figure grid reference the first 2 digits to be Eastings and the last 2 Digits to be Northings for 4 figure grid references.
The 6 figure grid reference the first 3 digits are Eastings and the last 3 digits are Northings
Conclusion
