Life in the Trenches

Introduction

You have just finished visiting The National World War I Museum and Memorial where you learned about World War I, the role of the US in World War I, the Armistice, and The Paris Peace Conference.  What did you learn about life in the trenches during World War I?

Task

The task will be to create a presentation talking about the role of trenches during World War I. You will be talking from the point of view of a soldier living in the trenches. Aside from text explaining how trench warfare was used in World War I and why it played such an important role, the presentation must include pictures, videos and a diagram/ map of the trenches dug up during World War I (use blue for the Allies and red for the Central Powers).

Process

1. Read about trench warfare. Start with this website https://www.theworldwar.org/learn/wwi/trenches then explain the role trenches played in the war and why trenches were widely used.

2. Look for a map of the trenches of World War I.  How long were the trenches? The trenches stretched from where to where?

3. Watch this video to learn about life in the trenches https://www.iwm.org.uk/history/life-in-the-trenches-of-the-first-world-war

Conclusion

Congratulations! You have completed experiencing life in the trenches during World War I.  I look forward to reading seeing your presentation and experiencing how life was like as a soldier living in one of the trenches.

Do you think trenches were important during World War I? If you were a soldier during this time, how do you think life would be like living in the trenches day in and day out? How was trench warfare different from the way succeeding wars were conducted?
