Introduction:

You and your friend are playing near the creek that runs behind your house when you see some small bubble-like things in the water. The tiny round orbs have a tiny speck inside and seem to be wiggling. You excitedly call your friend over to look at your discovery. Your friend calls the squirming spheres “tadpoles” and claims they are baby frogs. You are skeptical. These certainly don't look like baby frogs. Surely your friend is mistaken, or are they? To find out, you are going to have to learn about the life cycle of a frog!

Task

Task:

From our study of butterflies, we know that caterpillars go through a changing process called metamorphosis. Did you know that frogs also go through metamorphosis? In this WebQuest you will learn about the fascinating life cycle of a frog! You will hear a song, read a book, watch some videos, and even play game about frogs! By the time you finish, you will be able to able to identify and describe the five stages of a frog’s life cycle. You will record your finds in your science journal, and demonstrate your understanding with a group project of your choosing.

Process

Roles:

For this WebQuest you will be working in groups of 5. Each member of your group will be responsible for one stage of the life cycle. You may each use your own device to complete the tasks, but together the group will produce one final learning product.

Step 1: Listen

Choose a frog life cycle song to listen to or listen to both:

1. Froggy Froggy! by Harry Kindergarten Music

2. Metamorphosis Song by Jack Hartmann

Step 2: Read

You have the choice to visit a webpage titled Life Cycle of a Frog or listen to a reading of the book Frogs by Gail Gibbons.

1. Life Cycle of a Frog by Smartclass4kids.com

2. Frogs by Gail Gibbons read by Jennifer Shaffer

Step 3: Watch

Please view both videos; both are very short.

Step 4: Reflect

In your science journal, write and complete the following statements:

1. A frog begins as an __________.

2. The egg hatches and a ______________ is born.

3. A tadpole begins to grow ________________.

4. A ____________ has front legs, back legs, and a tail.

4. A froglet grows into a ________________.

Step 5: Collaborate

Once all members of your group have completed the first 4 tasks, you may begin your final learning product. While you are waiting for team members to finish you may revisit the learning options in Step 1 and 2 or play the Frog Life Cycle game:  https://www.softschools.com/science/frog/life_cycle.jsp

For the final learning product, your team will need to discuss the 5 stages of the frog life cycle: egg, tadpole, tadpole with legs, froglet, frog. Each team member will be responsible for 1 stage of the life cycle. Your group may choose between a multimedia presentation or a display board.

1. Multimedia Presentation:

  • Acceptable formats are PowerPoint and Google Slides
  • Each group member will create one slide for their assigned stage of a frog's life cycle.
  • The slide must include the name of the life stage, an image of the life stage, and a description written in complete sentences.
  • Images must be credited, failure to do so will impact all group members' scores!
  • Do not copy description directly from source, must be in your own words. Plagiarism will impact score of all group members!
  • The presentation should also include a title page that includes the names of all group members.
  • The presentation must be in sequential order from egg to adult frog.
  • Once complete, presentation must be submitted to teacher by email.

2. Display board:

  • Acceptable formats are full size poster board or tri-fold display board.
  • Each group member will draw an image of their assigned stage, label the stage, and write a description of the  life stage using complete sentences and legible handwriting.
  • Do not copy description directly from source, must be in your own words. Plagiarism will impact score of all group members!
  • The display must also include a title and the names of all group members.
  • Organization of the display should reflect the sequence of the life cycle, egg to adult frog.

Please refer to the evaluation rubric for grading information.

Conclusion

In this WebQuest we learned about the 5 stages in the life cycle of frogs. We learned that a tadpole hatches out of an egg that was laid in the water.  Tadpoles have a body and a tail, but no legs.  Tadpoles also have gills like fish.  Then, they start to grow back legs and are called tadpoles with legs. Next, the front legs begin to grow and the tail begins to shrink, becoming what we call froglets.  Gradually a froglet's tail disappears and the froglet will begin to breathe through lungs. Now they are adult frogs. Frogs can live on land or in water. Adult frogs can also lay eggs and that starts the cycle over again!
