Introduction
Introduction: Letter S Hooking Activity
1- Mystery Box 🧰 that has letter S items
A colorful box filled with items that start with the /s/ sound (snake toy, sun picture, sock, strawberry, star,...).
I shake the box and tease the learners to trigger their curiosity then I ask:
What do you think is inside?”
2- Reveal & Explore
Take out each item one by one.
Say the word slowly, emphasizing the /s/ sound:
“sssssnake, ssssssun”
I ask children to repeat after me.
3- Sound Discovery
Ask: “What sound do you hear at the beginning?”
Introduce the letter:
“Today we will learn a special letter that makes this sound sssss. It is the letter S!”
Task
The What: What the learners will acquire at the end of the quest:
-Letter Recognition (Recognize letter S)
-Letter Formation (Model and trace letter S)
-Sound Identification (Produce /s/ clearly)
-Word association (Name some letter S words)
-Participation (very active and engaged)
Process
Step 1: Watch and Learn
Now let's see how the letter S looks like. (I use the white board). Start at the top… make a little curve… then go the other way… ohhhh look it looks like an animal that crawls and slithers! What is this animal? yes it's a snake!
-Body Movement – “Slithering S” (scaffolding)
-Since S looks like the snake, let's move our bodies like the slithering snake. look at me and I show them how I move like a snake (slithering side to side).
-Then I ask them to do it with me and they say with me “sssssssss” while moving. Now do it alone... super job!
This connects sound + body movement. And it is multi-sensory learning since they are:
seeing (watching me), moving (slithering), hearing and saying the sound (“ssssss”).
-Now let's write it together slowly with our finger in the air. We start at the top, curve around like a snake!”
Step 2: Watch, Listen and Explore
Now we are going to watch "Sam and Sally" story through the folowing NoteBookLM link:
Step 3: Letter S Words Detectives
-Now it's time to tell me the letter S words mentioned in the story. I write them in a mindmap. (I can ask the high acheivers to draw them)
-After that, I display the flashcards that are mentioned in the story. 9Real flashcards or power point presentation).
Step 4: Create
- The learners will be divided into centers:
Group 1: Will trace letter S using laminated cards
Group 2: Will draw the letter S using a salt box
Group 3: Will model letter S using play dough
Group 4: Will listen to letter S song through the Youtube link below. As they listen, I pause and ask them to repeat letter S words with their initial sound.
(Station rotation will be done).
