Let’s Count and Compare! A Kindergarten Math Adventure

Introduction

Numbers are all around us! We use numbers when we count our fingers/toes, share snacks with friends, and even when we line up at school. In this lesson, students will explore numbers by counting real objects and using counting to solve simple problems.

Guiding Question:

How can we use counting to compare groups and make decisions in our everyday lives?

Learning Objective:

Students will count objects up to 20 and use their counting skills to compare two groups and explain which has more, less, or the same.

Florida B.E.S.T. Standard:

MA.K.NSO.1.2 — Count to tell the number of objects and compare groups of objects.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level:

Understand and Apply

Task

Students will work in small groups to complete a counting poster project.

Each group will count different classroom objects, compare two groups of objects, create a colorful poster showing their counting and comparisons, present their poster to the class. Students will explain which group has more, less, or the same.

Process

Step 1: The students will be divided into groups of 3.

Each student will have a role:

Counter: Counts the objects carefully

Recorder: Draws or writes the numbers on the poster

Checker: Makes sure the counting is correct.

Step 2: Groups will use https://www.starfall.com/h/math/ to practice counting before creating their project:

Step 3: Each group will receive two sets of classroom objects. They can choose from blocks, crayons, or buttons.

Step 4: Students will count each group of objects, decide which group has more or less, draw pictures of the objects, write the numbers.

Step 5: Students will decorate their poster and prepare to share with the class.

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated and be able to received a score of 2-4, based on the following:

Counting Skill

4 = Counts objects correctly and confidently

3 = Counts most objects correctly

2 = Needs help counting

Comparing Numbers

4 = Correctly explains more, less, or same

3 = Mostly correct explanation

2 = Has difficulty explaining

Participation

4 = Actively works with group

3 = Participates sometimes

2 = Needs reminders to participate

Conclusion

Today we learned how counting helps us understand numbers and compare groups of objects.
