Introduction

Purpose of this Unit

 

The purpose of this unit is to expose students to Adjective Comparison. Adjectives can be describe as any word used to describe a

noun or a pronoun.

Adjectives make our works visual and distinctive. It speaks to readers’ detects; in this way, they can listen, see, touch, taste, and even

notice what is being portrayed. Likewise, utilization of adjectives makes reading and writing substantially more fun and it sets the tone for

composition.

 

Learning Outcomes:

After completing this unit, students will be able to: 

 

1. Understand the three degrees of comparing adjectives.

 

2. Explain the rules to form the comparative and superlative degree of adjectives.

 

3. Identify adjectives, which do not follow the rules of comparison and what type of adjectives they are.

 

4. Complete sentences by inserting the comparative or superlative form of the adjective.

1. This Webquest comprises three activities prior to completing the activities, you are required to view the video about the Comparison         

     of adjectives to supplement your understanding.

 

2. You are then required to thoroughly read through the examples before proceeding to attempt the succeeding exercises. 

 

3. The first activity requires you to complete fourteen sentences by filling in the blanks.

 

4. The second activity is based on the information about irregular adjectives in the table; it requires you to complete eight sentences by

    filling in the blanks.

Explanation

 

1. The Positive Degree:

 

The positive degree relates to when we say something about a person or thing, without comparing.

 

Example: Marlon is tall.

2. The Comparative Degree:

 

The comparative degree relates to when we compare two persons or things.

 

Example: Luke is taller than Marlon.

3. The Superlative Degree:

 

When we compare three or more persons or things.

 

Example: Noah is the tallest of the three boys.

Here are some rules to form the Comparative and Superlative degree of adjectives.                                                

 

1. We add er and est to most adjectives:

 

Example:    Great                           Greater                                    Greatest

 

2. When adjectives end in e, drop the e before adding er and est

 

Example:    Wise                             Wiser                                        Wisest

 

 

3.  When the adjective ends in y, change the y to I; then add er and est

               

Example:         Lovely                         Lovelier                                   Loveliest

 

4. Double the last letter before adding er and est

 

Example:           Hot                              Hotter                                      Hottest

 

5.For longer adjectives or those of more than two syllables, add more or most before them.

 

Example:           Beautiful                        More beautiful                       Most beautiful

 

 

 

 

Some adjectives do not follow the rules of comparison we have learned; they are irregular adjectives.
