An Introduction

The American Civil War of 1861-1865

The American Civil War of 1861-1865 was one of the deadliest and destructive wars fought on American soil over the institution of slavery. The Civil War played a vital role in forming the nation we live in today. The two parties involved in this conflict were the Union (North or United States of America) and the Confederate States of America (the South). A total of eleven southern states agreed to unite and separate from the Union, in order to create their own country. This separation angered the United States and they raged war in the hopes of keeping the country as one unit.  The war began on April 12, 1861 at Fort Sumter in Charleston. Lincoln vowed to do whatever he had to in order to keep a democratic united nation and prevent states becoming individual countries. The North view on slavery was the opposite of the South’s they viewed slavery as cruel and unjust treatment of human beings because they were black. The South’s view on slavery was just the opposite and they wanted to their way of life to continue with them owning slaves. In 1963, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which dissolved slavery in the south and later will put an end to slavery across the nation. The Civil War lasted duration of four years, but on January 9, 1865 it came to an end when the South surrendered. The North was the victory in defeating the Confederate Army. Many lives were lost in the war, families destroyed, and property in ruins. Our country would never be the same, but it did a peace to all citizens and declared all to be equal.
