Learning Number for upper primary students

Introduction

Step into our interactive learning environment, where we focus on mastering place value, expanded form, decimal placement, rounding, and estimation. Let's explore these concepts together and enhance your understanding!

Task

LESSON 1: Exploring place value of numbers from 1 to 1000

Students will engage in technology-based activities throughout this lesson to deepen their understanding of place value. Teacher will gather data of student understanding of place value through a pretest which will be revisited in Lesson 5.

Australian Curriculum Links:

  • AC9M4N01 Recognise and extend the application of place value to tenths and hundredths and use the conventions of decimal notation to name and represent decimals

Mind map activity

Students will use a mind map to visually represent their current place value knowledge.

Tune in video: Place Value Song

Teacher note: teacher calls upon students for engagement

Students watch a brief video on place value, accompanied by a catchy song to aid comprehension. Following the video, students will engage in a quick peer discussion, 'turn and talk,' to reflect on their learning.

Pre-Test: place value

Teacher note: the following pre-test will also be used in lesson 5 as a post-test. This will ensure that the data is accurate. Students are encouraged to leave blank questions they are unsure of; they will have a chance to demonstrate their learning in lesson 5.

Interactive online game: Tens and Ones

Students will explore IXL and Topmarks interactive activity focusing on place value using thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. Students have 10 minutes to independently, using iPads or laptops to follow the link and play (see link below)

Differentiated worksheets: collecting data on student understanding

Teacher note: teacher will model worksheets first.

Teacher will provide and model worksheets to guide students in demonstrating their understanding of place value. Teacher uses previous data and classroom observations to decide on the level (use the links below). Worksheets used as evidence of learning progression for end of unit comparison.

Extension workbook

For students seeking additional challenges, there is an option to complete work tasks focusing on advanced place value concepts.

LESSON 2: Writing number in expanded form

Students will engage in technology-based activities throughout this lesson to deepen their understanding of writing number in expanded form. Teacher will model differentiated worksheet and provide enabling prompts and extension activities for learners.

Australian Curriculum Links

  • ACMNA054: Solve problems involving multiplication of large numbers by one- or two-digit numbers using efficient mental and written strategies.

Tune in video: Number in expanded form

Teacher note: teacher calls upon students for engagement

Students watch a short video on writing numbers in expanded form, and they sing along to help them understand numbers in expanded form. Students will have a peer discussion about what they have learned during the video.

Interactive online game: Number Train

Students explore Top Marks and Twinkle's interactive activity sheets on writing numbers in expanded form. Students are given 10 minutes to explore the link below.

Differentiated worksheets: writing numbers in expanded form

The teacher models worksheets, and students are provided an opportunity to ask questions. Students complete worksheets to demonstrate their understanding of writing numbers in expanded form.

Extension worksheet

For students seeking additional challenges, there is an option to complete a workbook focusing on advanced learning of writing numbers in expanded form.

LESSON 3: Understanding decimal placement and fractions

Students are now familiar with place value and writing the number in the expanded form. Students will now look at decimal place and fractions. For example, if I have the number 100 and I want this to be 1 dollar, I would put the decimal between the one and the 0; for example, $1.00 equals $1.

Australian Curriculum Links:

  • AC9M4N01 Recognise and extend the application of place value to tenths and hundredths and use the conventions of decimal notation to name and represent decimals

Tune in 'Turn and Talk'

Teacher prompts students to discuss and reflect on current knowledge

Tune in the video: Understanding of decimal placing

Teacher note: teacher calls upon students for engagement

Students watch a short video on decimal placing, and they sing along to help them understand place value. Students have a peer discussion on what they have learned during the videos.

Interactive online games: Fractions and decimals

Teacher note: teacher will model and demonstrate first if students require assistance.

Students use interactive games to understand decimal places and fractions. Students are given 10 minutes to explore the games. Now that students ******

Differentiated worksheets: Decimal places and fractions

Teacher note: teacher will model the worksheets first.

Students will make pizzas during the lesson and divide them into portions using the decimal and fraction concepts they have learnt during the lesson.

An example would be cutting the pizza into 10th and then working out how many people in a group of 5 would get pizza and the amount they would each get.

Extension worksheet

For students seeking additional challenges, there is an option to complete extra work tasks on decimal placing and fractions.

LESSON 4: rounding and estimation

Students will explore mathematical concept of estimation and rounding. Students will engage in peer learning to check the reasonableness of answers to calculations.

Australian Curriculum Links:

  • AC9M4N07 Choose and use estimation and rounding to check and explain the reasonableness of calculations, including the results of financial transactions

Tune in video: Estimation and rounding numbers

Students watch a video on estimating numbers and engage in a discussion

Interactive online games: rounding and estimation

Students will engage with interactive games on rounding and estimation, which are available on the links to Twinkl and Topmarks below. These activities can be accessed using either an iPad or a laptop provided by the teacher. Students may collaborate in pairs or small groups depending on the devices available. (Links provided below)

Differentiated worksheets: rounding and estimation

Teacher note: Teacher will provide and model worksheets to guide students in demonstrating their understanding of rounding and estimation. Teacher uses previous data and classroom observations to decide on the level (use the links below). Worksheets used as evidence of learning progression for end of unit comparison

Students complete worksheets to enhance their understanding of rounding and estimation. Students complete worksheets in small groups of 2 - 4. Students are allocated groups and worksheets to ensure they are working 'at-level'.

Extension worksheet

For students seeking additional challenges, there is an option to complete work tasks focusing on rounding and estimation.

Lesson 5: Place value post-test

Australian Curriculum Links:

  • AC9M4N01 Recognise and extend the application of place value to tenths and hundredths and use the conventions of decimal notation to name and represent decimals
  • ACMNA054: Solve problems involving multiplication of large numbers by one- or two-digit numbers using efficient mental and written strategies.
  • AC9M4N07 Choose and use estimation and rounding to check and explain the reasonableness of calculations, including the results of financial transactions.

Objective: Apply understanding of place value, expanded form, decimal placement, rounding, and estimation.

During this lesson, students will demonstrate their comprehension of concepts covered in lessons 1 through 4. At the start of this unit, students completed a pre-test, identifying areas of uncertainty or questions left unanswered, which was submitted during lesson 1.

In this lesson, the teacher will guide students through the completion of the test, utilising their pre-test responses to assess progress made over the past six weeks of learning.

Interactive online game if you finish early.
