Learning the Months of the Year

Introduction

Have you ever wondered how many months there are in a year, or which special holidays and seasons fall in each month? The year is made up of twelve months, and each one is special in its own way. Learning about the months of the year helps us understand the calendar and keep track of time. By knowing the months, we can better organize our days, celebrate special occasions, and understand how the seasons change throughout the year.

Guiding Questions:

What are the months of the year?

What order do the months go in?

What events or seasons happen during different months?

Learning Objectives:

Identify the 12 months of the year

Sequence the months in the correct order

Link month to seasons and familiar events

Florida's State Standards:

MA.K.M.1.1 –Florida Kindergarten math standard where students describe measurable qualities of objects (length, weight, and capacity) using words instead of numbers.

SS.K.A.3.2 – Florida Kindergarten social studies standard where students explain that calendars show the days of the week and the months of the year.

Bloom's Taxonomy:

Remember: Naming the months

Understand: Describing events/seasons in different months

Apply: Placing months in calendar order

Analyze: Comparing assigned months and their seasons

Evaluate: Explaining why holidays and events belong in specific months

Create: Designing original posters or slides with visuals and sentences

Task

Students will work in small groups of 3–5 to create a "Months of the Year" project. Each group will be assigned two months and should create either a poster or a simple slideshow. The poster or slideshow should include a picture representing the seasons and events that happen during each month, with the name of the month displayed above the picture. Students should also write a short sentence describing each month (for example: "December is winter, we celebrate Christmas," or "July is summer, we celebrate the 4th of July"). Students will present their projects to the class, explaining their assigned months. Groups will present in calendar order based on the months they were assigned.

Process

Step 1: Introduction

Watch sing-along videos about the months of the year, including the seasons and events in each month.

Step 2: Grouping

Students will be placed into small groups and assigned two specific months to work on.

Step 3: Technology Use

Students will have time to explore teacher-approved online resources for their project.

Step 4: Project Work

Each student must participate and collaborate. The group will:

- Create a presentation or poster about the assigned months.

- Compare their two assigned months by discussing how the seasons are similar or different.

- Explain why certain holidays or events belong in each month (for example, why Christmas happens in December or why the 4th of July is celebrated in July).

- Create original visuals by drawing pictures or selecting images that represent the season and events of each month.

- Write original sentences describing each month using their own words.

For each assigned month, a slide or section includes:

       - The name of the month

       - Pictures representing the month, including its season and holidays/events

       - A short sentence describing the month

Step 5: Class Presentation

Each group will present their project in calendar order. Every student will present information about the assigned months, including explaining the seasons and holidays.

Step 6: Review

After all presentations, the class will review the months of the year and recap what was learned.

Evaluation
Criteria Excellent Good Needs Improvement
Month Identification Correctly names all months (25%) Names most assigned months (17%) Needs help naming months (8%)
Month Order Months are in correct order (25%) Some errors in order (17%) Order is incorrect (8%)
Participation Actively participates in group work (25%) Participates with few reminders (17%) Rarely participates (8%)
Visuals Pictures/drawings are clear, colorful, and include labels and sentences (25%) Some pictures and labels included (17%) Few pictures or labels not clear (8%)

Total Points = 100%

Conclusion

Great job! Students have learned the months of the year, along with their seasons and special holidays. This project gave them the opportunity to work together and learn as a team. For further enrichment, students can draw their favorite month and explain why it is special to them.
