Learning the Alphabet - K.RF.3

Introduction
Welcome friends! We are going to start learning about our alphabet. Do you know anything about the alphabet? Have you ever heard about uppercase and lowercase letters? The alphabet is what we use to read, write, and spell. The alphabet can be seen everywhere, where have you seen it?           Cute Alphabet Clip Art

Task

There are a few tasks we have to complete. Some we will do together and other task you will need to complete on your devices. By the end of our WebQuest, we should all be able to name the letters of the alphabet and identify uppercase and lowercase letters.

Process

Part 1: Create flashcards:

- Grab some notecards, you will need 26 note cards. This is because there are 26 letters in the alphabet. You will make a notecard for each letter.

- Start with the letter A, write a uppercase A on one side then a lowercase A on the opposite side.

- If you would like to add a picture of an animal to help to remember the letter, ask me and I will print them off for you. You will then be able to glue these to your flashcards. So make sure to leave room for a picture when writing the letters.

- We will use these flashcards throughout the time we are learning about the alphabet. We will use them in small groups, by yourself and for practice at home.

Part 2: Identify uppercase and lowercase letters:

- Now that we have made our flashcards, we need to be able to identify uppercase and lowercase letters.

- Use your flashcards with a partner to help each other identify which side is uppercase and which is lowercase.

- In small groups you will also be able to use foam letters, magnetic letters, and writing on white boards to identify which letters are uppercase or lowercase.

Part 3: Use our technology skills to help us learn more about the alphabet:

- Now that we have made flashcards and learned about small group activities, we will now be using our technology.

- I have three activities for you two websites and a video.

- The first link is to Starfall, please use these link to learn more about the alphabet. Start with selecting Kindergarten, then ABC's and finally go through the letters and learn more about them.

- Use the second link to identify uppercase and lowercase letters. Then match the pictures with the correct letter they start with.

- The third link is a song, we will watch this video together and learn the song together.

Evaluation

I will be using the rubric below to evaluate the students on their ability to name the letters of the alphabet and identify uppercase and lowercase letters. Students will meet in a one on one setting with the teacher to use their notecards while I assess them on their ability to name and identify. Students are required to meet at least a 4 on their evaluation to be able to be moved on to the next unit.

Conclusion

Good job friends, I am excited that we were to create and learn new tools that will help us learn our alphabet. As well as how to identify uppercase and lowercase letters. As we used our flashcards and the websites we should all be able to name the letters of the alphabet. When you name the alphabet we should also be able to identify if a letter is uppercase or lowercase. Think about any other questions you would like to learn about the alphabet. Please continue to practice with those at home or in small groups to continuing practicing the alphabet.

Credits

I would like to acknowledge IUK for suggesting this website as a suitable source to creating a Web Quest. This website allowed for a user friendly experiencing when creating a Web Quest. As well as IDOE for the easy access of kindergarten standards.

Teacher Page

My goal of this Web Quest was to allow for students to teach themselves components of the alphabet compared to listening to a teacher lecture. This will help the students become self-reliant while also allowing the teacher to be able to visit different small groups during stations.

Standard:

K.RF.3 - Identify and name all uppercase (capitol) and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
