A dictionary is a book with words arranged in alphabetical order.  The order of letters in the alphabet from A-Z is called alphabetical order.

Dictionaries can tell us

a. The meaning of a word

b. How to spell a word

c. What part of speech it is

d. How a word is used

Parts of a dictionary

The guide word-  The guide word help us t find words quickly by telling us the first and last words on a page. The word on the left is the first word on the page and the word on the right is the last word.

For example

Note: Did you notice the word cell and February at the top of the page?

           Did you notice the word cell is the first entry word and February is last word?

The entry word-

-Each word for which the meaning is given is an entry word.

-Many entry word have more than one meaning, each meaning is numbered. 

-Each entry word is usually in bold print

-Each entry word also has the parts of speech. The parts of speech are abbreviated in this way : 

Noun- n, verb- v, adjective - adj, adverb- adv

Activity 2: The listed of words are incorrectly spelt. Read the given meanings. Find the correctly spelt words in the dictionary then complete the table.
