After meeting with your regional manager (your teacher), everyone will work together in groups of four (a detective agency) investigating one element of art. Each detective agent will choose one piece of artwork of a famous artist from the link provided in the next section to see how the artist used that element of art. (You may have to dig deep to find the hidden clues!) After your investigation is complete, you will analyze your discoveries and present this information to the class on a poster. A picture of the works of art must be included.
Extension Activity - If you finish your tasks you are also required to include background information about the artists such as where and when they were born, art forms, style, materials and techniques.
Now let's move on to the task at hand to see exactly what you should do!
Process
1. Get into groups of four assigned by the teacher. Once in your group, decide what you would like to name your detective agency and decide which role each person will play in the agency. |

3. The secretary will take notes about the element of art that your agency has been assigned, to type and print for the poster. In your own words write about 2 to 3 sentences about the element of art. |
4. Each member of your detective agency will be given or decide on a different artwork each to print from the section on their element of art. |
5. Talk together about your element of art. Each member needs to assist in collecting examples of your element of art from magazines to stick onto the poster and as well as drawings. |
6. The secretary will write down any suggestions, ideas or questions made by each member of your agency. |
7. Everyone will and answer the analysis questions found on the next Evaluation tab at the top of the page about the artwork they printed for the poster. Refer back to the website to show how your element of art was used to make the artwork great.Type your answers and stick onto your poster. |
8. The head investigator will print out or make sure that everyone has printed their artwork. Include the caption information found underneath each artwork of the artist name, title, materials and date. |
9. Work together to gather the materials and information needed to create your poster and decide how you will put your poster together to make it “WOW". (How about using some of those elements of art you have learned to decorate and arrange the information on your poster?) |
10. Everyone will help assemble the poster. Remember to include the creative name of your detective agency and your names and grade. |
11. The presenter will include photographic evidence of collaboration on the poster, introduce the detective agency group and members to the class and display the groups work in presenting their investigation results to the class. |
Evaluation
Analysis questions about the artwork:
1. Describe what you can see in the artwork?
2. How and when was the artwork made?
3. What parts of the artwork show your element of art?
4. What is your judgement or opinion of the artwork: Do you think it is a successful piece of art, why or why not?
Evaluation Questions about your collaborative group:
1. What things did your group do to work well together?
2. Did each member of the group contribute an even amount of work load?
3. Could your group improve in any areas of the investigation?
4. Give your group a score out of 10 for how well you completed the final task of the poster.
____ / 10
Conclusion
By investigating the elements of art, you can now understand better how artists create their work.
You will look at artwork in a different way.
Now that you know about the elements or art, you will be able to use them in your artwork to make it even better!

This lesson is designed to teach Year 7 students about the elements of art. It is important to let them know what can help them be more successful when creating art. It is important that students try to understand the way artists think when creating great artwork. It will also help students become more familiar with famous works of art and the artists that created them with a cooperative learning environment. |
Prior to beginning this WebQuest, we suggest that you show the students a few famous prints and get their reaction to them. After the WebQuest is completed, have the students review the same works and see if their reactions are different. |
