Kurunjang Secondary College - Year 7 Art Learning Task 1: Elements of Art Webquest

Introduction

Art Detective Agency Recruitment Centre

You have been selected to complete a top secret mission impossible task. You are now a member of the Art detective agency investigating why great artwork uses the elements of art. These elements of art are present in every great piece of artwork. You must search for these elements with the resources given and analyse how they are used. Each "detective agency" will be made up of 4 people and will be given an element of art and artworks to investigate. You must work cooperatively with others in your detective agency to investigate and present your discoveries!

Task

There are 4 jobs in each detective agency, one for each person. You will decide together which person is best suited for which job.

Manager

  • Manager and Illustrator - Your job is to help the people who are working in your agency to stay on task so that you can get the job done successfully. You also prepare the poster with a heading of your element, subheadings of the artists and artworks and a border design.
Head Investigator

  • Head Investigator- Your job is to copy and paste the analysis questions from the Evaluation page into Word. Make sure each member of the group has a printed copy to answer about their chosen artwork. Collect all 4 responses from the analysis questions from the group to add to the poster. Assist members of your agency who have not completed this task.
Secretary

  • Secretary- Your job is to gather the information about your groups element of art - about a paragraph in your own words. Print and stick onto poster. Share it with the group to work together in analysing your chosen artworks. Using this information, all members identify and explain the clues found in the artworks that show your element of art. Type your responses in Word, print and stick onto poster.
Storyteller/Presenter
  • Photographer and Presenter- Your job is to monitor the progress of the investigation, take photos of evidence of your group working collaboratively, complete an evaluation then present the poster that your group will make to show the results of your investigation.

After meeting with your regional manager (your teacher), everyone will work together in groups of four (a detective agency) investigating one element of art. Each detective agent will choose one piece of artwork of a famous artist from the link provided in the next section to see how the artist used that element of art. (You may have to dig deep to find the hidden clues!) After your investigation is complete, you will analyze your discoveries and present this information to the class on a poster. A picture of the works of art must be included.

Extension Activity - If you finish your tasks you are also required to include background information about the artists such as where and when they were born, art forms, style, materials and techniques.

Now let's move on to the task at hand to see exactly what you should do!

This lesson is designed to teach Year 7 students about the elements of art. It is important to let them know what can help them be more successful when creating art. It is important that students try to understand the way artists think when creating great artwork. It will also help students become more familiar with famous works of art and the artists that created them with a cooperative learning environment.

Prior to beginning this WebQuest, we suggest that you show the students a few famous prints and get their reaction to them. After the WebQuest is completed, have the students review the same works and see if their reactions are different.
