Chapter 1: Intro to Kinesiology

Introduction

In this lesson you will be learning the basics of kinesiology and the foundations that you will use throughout the course. After this lesson you will be able to usnderstand the types of contractions muscles create, the roles that the muscles play, and the different planes that muscles work in.

Task

Throughout this lesson you will learn many beginning concepts that we will build on throughout the course. For this assignment you will create a powerpoint using only one muscle of your choice. You will research this muscle specifically after you hae read the material, then you will apply your muscle to the concepts you learned including tpes of contraction when performing a certain movement, the role that the muscle plays in this movement and the plane it is working in. You will choose three movements for that muscle.

Process

Example of what information needs to be in the powerpoint:

Quadriceps:

Squat

During the upward motion of a squat the quadricep is performing a concentric contraction, and it is the agonist.  On the downward motion it is performing an eccentric contraction, and it is the antagonist.

This motion is performed in a frontal plane.

Evaluation

Please e-mail me your powerpoints and I will post them all on the myCMU web page and that way everyone in the class can see everyone else's muscles and learn from them.

Here is how I will grade:

Category 5 4 3 2 1
Powerpoint Organization Powerpoint is clearly defined, colors are used, subject matter is clearly written and understood. Powerpoint is somewhat clear, colors are used, subject matter is there but not completely clear. Powerpoint is messy, few colors used, subject matter is not all there. Powerpoint is very messy, one color used. Powerpoint has no color, no subject matter.
Muscle All muscles are described and shown in picture. Most of the muscles are described and pictures used. Only a few muscles are described and pictures used. A few muscles are described and no pictures used. No muscles are described or pictures used.
Three Movements All movements are described and shown in picture. Most of the movements are described and pictures used Only a few movements are described and pictures used. A few movements are described and no pictures used. No movements are described or pictures used.
Correct Type of Contraction All contractions are described and shown in picture. Most of the contractions are described and pictures used Only a few contractions are described and pictures used. A few contractions are described and no pictures used. No contractions are described or pictures used.
Correct Plane All planes are described and shown in picture. Most of the planes are described and pictures used Only a few planes are described and pictures used. A few planes are described and no pictures used. No planes are described or pictures used.
Correct type of muscle during that movement All muscles during movement are described and shown in picture. Most of the muscles during movement are described and pictures used Only a few muscles during movement are described and pictures used. A few muscles during movement are described and no pictures used. No muscles during movement are described or pictures used.

Total Project is worth 30pts.

Conclusion

In conclusion we are learning the basics and what we will build on for the rest of the semester. After looking over everyone's powerpoints you should have an idea of the understanding the types of contractions muscles create, the roles that the muscles play, and the different planes that muscles work in.
