Final Order of Operations

Introduction

This Webquest is designed for students who are in 6th grade math and learning PEMDAS (order of operations).

Questions to think about...

Have you ever seen a problem that has subtraction and addition? Where do you start? In today's lesson we will learn how to correctly complete the order of operations to solve problems.

Imagine you were making a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich, what would you do first? In between and last? Would you put the bread away before making the sandwhich? Or smear peanutbutter on one side before putting the two pieces of bread together? There are ways to complete our every day actions, just like in doing a math equation.

Please quietly discuss the order of making a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich.

Think about...

  • What should happen first? Last?
  • Can the order of some things be done first or second?
  • Are the steps the same for every person?

Example:

6-2+4 (because it is addition and subtraction you can do either step first)

4+4 (combining like terms)

8 (answer)

Let's play Krypto as a group!

Task
  • First we will watch a video to review PEMDAS

  • The task for you is to individually examine the 5 problems given to determine the order of operations you will use first. Spend 10 minutes to yourself, if you get stuck move on, we will be getting into partner groups at the sounds of the timer.

  • Once you are in your groups discuss what was hard, go over your answers with your peers and check your answers

  • Do not change your answers, it is alright to have them wrong.

  • Once partner time is up we will discuss problems in class and review for tomorrows lesson.

Process
  1. First step is to examine the math problem
  2. Identify any parentheses.
  3. Complete section within parentheses.
  4. Identify any exponents.
  5. Power roots before multiplying or dividing
  6. Multiply or divide
  7. Add or subtract

Example:

5 + 4 - 2 =

9-2

7

Evaluation
  1. Students will create their own acronym for PEMDAs to remember (Can be Song or Saying)
  2. Students will have group time to complete 5 math problems in class
  3. Students will be given nightly homework of 10 problems to complete
  4. Quiz on Friday

Students will be active learners in this webquest, as a class we will watch videos, play Krypto, and have partner and independent work. After completing this webquest students will work independently and with their peers in groups of 2 or 3. The students will be evaluated on their acronym of PEMDAS, independent work, and how well they worked with their peers. Students daily work will be collected for points and homework will be handed in. I will also grade a quiz that will be given after the webquest is completed.

Conclusion

Here is what we have learned:

  • The correct order of operations (what order to complete)
  • How to remember PEMDAS
  • Working with others

Short Quiz:

Please take out a sheet of paper and number 1-4

1) What is the order or operations?

2) True or false: Addition or subtraction can be done first

3) 2(3+1) - 3 =

4) Please express if you have any more questions or concerns I can help you with

Congrats! You've finished this week's Webquest!
