Day One: American History
During the beginning of class last week as a class we began reading the book titled “The Great Adventure: Theodore Roosevelt and the Rise of Modern America,” by Albert Marrin. As a class we have read this book every day and while at home you guys were ask to read so many chapters for homework. So, on today our readings should have been completed and it’s time for us to discuss Theodore Roosevelt.
Discussion Questions:
- Who is Theodore Roosevelt to you? Answers must be completed in five sentences or more.
- As President; what were Roosevelt’s beliefs? Answer in complete sentences.
- What were the occupations of Roosevelt’s parents? Did his parents struggle to provide for him or were they’re living conditions comfortable?
- What physical conditions did Roosevelt suffer from? What happened where he was able to combat these conditions?
- What college did Roosevelt attend and what were his studies of choice?
- What areas of study did he struggle in?
- What traumatic events took place in his personal life?
- What made people during that time, think of Roosevelt as the “modern man?”
- Based on your personal opinion; what type of person do you consider Theodore Roosevelt to be?
- If he was alive today, what political party would he belong to?
Day Two: World History
Yesterday, we found out much about Roosevelt through readings and discussion. Today I need for you guys to describe events that took place on these particular dates. Please write in complete, detail sentences.
- 1858
- 1880
- 1886-1890
- 1897
- 1901-1909
- 1914
- 1918
- 1919
Day Three: Civics/Government
While studying the subject of social studies we as a class have learn much about the importance of citizenship and the government. Continuing on with our lesson on the 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt; many citizens believe as TR believed that every citizen should in some way be an active citizen. This is to say, “That every citizen needs to be an active participant in our democracy and not a passive observer.” Accordingly, the teacher will first discuss this quote with their students in order to prepare them for the next step which is to set up a “Department of Civic Responsibility.” (a) So today I want you all to think about if you were living in the White House with your parents because your Dad has now become president. How would your daily life change as a son or daughter of the President in the White House? Think about these aspects of your life that would change: school, family life, friendships, worship, vacations, daily chores, public attention, travel, shopping and your behavior. In what other ways do you think your life would be different?
(b) It has been a tradition that the First Lady of the White House take up a cause such as literacy, getting kids to stay in school and anti-drug programs. Mrs. Obama has planted a “green” garden! President Bush’s daughters wrote books for children. Theodore Roosevelt’s sons joined the military during times of war. What cause would you take up to better the lives of your fellow citizens? For a project that will be due on Monday; I will ask that each of you find a partner whom you are close with and perform a local task to learn civic leadership and support for local communities. (Ex. clean a local park, volunteer at a soup kitchen, nursing home etc.; in a local community.) And to incorporate your parents; I would like for them to document your experience through video or photos. If they are photos they should be neatly organized on a poster and displayed in chronological order. Posters should be titled and dated with student’s name. The videos should be cased, or placed in a zip lock bag that’s titled and dated with student’s name.
Day Four: Geography
As we have learned that Geography is a field of science dedicated to the study of the lands, the features, the inhabitants, and the phenomena of the Earth. It known that Theodore Roosevelt helped protect more than 150 million acres of public lands during his lifetime. The North Dakota Park named after him is home to bison, deer, and other animals. Studying the wildlife was very important to him. So I must ask you all if you had to help protect A National Park which National Park would you choose and why? To answer this question, I will need for you all to select a park by searching the internet and write five paragraphs that give details of:
- Describe features of the park and its wildlife.
- Why this particular park was chosen?
- What concerns do you have for the park?
- If any; should any changes be done to the park?
- What could you do different if any changes are needed?
- Would helping the park be a great accomplishment for you and why?
- What wildlife calls this park?
- Is the wildlife being carefully taken care of? If yes, how are they being taken care of and if not, what are they doing wrong and what could be done different?
Along with any other needed information.
Day Five: Economics
What is Economics? Well we have recently learned that economics is the social science that studies the behavior of individuals, groups, and organizations (called economic actors, players, or agents), when they manage or use scarce resources, which have alternative uses, to achieve desired ends. Economics traditional concern is to gain an understanding of the processes that govern the production, distribution and consumption of good and services in an exchange economy. As president, Theodore Roosevelt pushed executive powers to new limits, arguing that the rise of industrial capitalism had rendered limited government obsolete.
- He took on the captains of industry and argued for greater government control over the economy, pursuing a two-pronged strategy of antitrust prosecutions and regulatory control.
- He pushed through legislation that gave the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) new powers to set railroad rates, laying the foundation for the modern administrative state.
- Casting himself as steward of the nation’s natural resources, he presided over the birth of the conservation movement.
- Convinced that a strong defense was the best guarantee of peace, he built up the Navy and sent it around the world.
Now, think of our current President (Barack Obama) what has he done the country economically. I need for you guys to research four or more findings of his accomplishment “economically.” This must be presented as a detailed outline of facts with correct sentence structure. These findings can be searched for through the internet, magazines, scholarly journals, articles, etc.
