Introduction

Sewing

  • craft of fastening or attaching objects using stitches made with a needle and thread.
  • one of the oldest textile arts, arising in the paleolithic era.

 

Sewing machine 

  • Used to sew fabric and other materials together with thread.
  • Invented during the first industrial revolution to decrease the amount of manual sewing work performed in clothing companies.
  • Considered as work of Elais Howard and Englishman Thomas Saint in 1790

1. Nbbbio - a cylinder or cone holding thread, yarn , wire used especially in weaving, machine sewing, and lace making.

2.Meas Reppir - use to remove stitches, open seams, cut threads and open buttonholes.

3. Tlebhmi - worn for protection on the finger that pushes the needle in sewing.

4. Sdearht - intended used to stitch one or more pieces of material or an object to a material.

5. Hnoiscuinp- a form of optical distortion in which straight lines along the edge of a screen or a lens bulge toward the center.

History of Sewing Machine: 

  • 1755- Charles Weisenthal, German immigrant , patented needle used for mechanical sewing
  • 1790- Thomas Saint, Englishman, first real sewing machine drawing
  • 1804- John Duncan , Scotish , embroidey machine using needles
  • 1810- Balthasar Krems , German , developed machine for sewing caps
  • 1818- John Adams Doge and John Knowles, machine that sew very short lenght of material
  • 1830- Barthelemy Thimmonnier, French , sewing machine originality for embroidery
  • 1833- Walter Hunt, American , first lockstitch machine ( produce short seams )
  • 1844- John Fisher , Englishman , developed the first working machine
  • 1844- Elias Hiwe, Massachussrts farmer , completed a prototype of sewing machine
  • Singer did not invented any notable sewing machine- he just pioneered the hire purchase system and aggressive sales tactics.

 

Different types of sewing machines:

1. Lockstitch sewing machine - usually used in homes and sometimes in school.

- it is run by foot and may also be converted to electric power machine.

- involves to threads passing over each other and locking the fabric in between.

 

2. Hi-speed sewing machine - used by tailors and dressmakers. 

- specially designed dry lubricated mechanism made with highly wearable materials prevents staining due to oil leaking from the needle bar.

- more faster compared to the lockstitch sewing machine.

 

3. Over edging machine - used to enclosed/sew the edge of the garments to avoid it from fluffing.

-  used to sew over the edge of one or two pieces of cabric for seaming, edging or hemming.

 

4. Embroidery machine - used in making fancy stitches and making different kinds of embroidery.

- used to create patterns on textiles, branding corporate advertisibg and uniform adornment.

- also used in the fashion industry to decorate gaflents and apparel.

 

5. Buttonholer- from the term itself, it is used to make a buttonhole in a garment.

- reinforced holes in fabric that buttons pass through, allowing one piece of fabric to be secured to another. The raw edge are usually finished with stitching.

 

6. Button attachment - used to attached the button in tha garments.

- automated the side to side and forwards and backwards motions.

Conclusion

Development of sewing machine:

  • Pattented needle for mechanical sewing machine was invented followed by the first real sewing machine drawing of Thomas Saint.
  • Embroidery machine using needles by John Duncan and Krems developed machine for sewing machine.
  • Very short lenght of materials and a sewing machine for embroidery by Barthelemy.
  • First lockstitch machine producing short seams by Walter and Fisher developed the first working machine.
  • Howe completed a prototyoe of sewing machine.
  • Singer pioneered the hire purchased system and aggressive sales tactics.
