Introduction

Welcome: Kindergarten Mapping
Description: The students will go on a 5 day journey learning about mapping skills using different tools such as a maps and globes. The students will read the book "Follow That Map" by Scot Ritchie. We will explore the different states, countries, and continents around the world.
Grade Level: Kindergarten

Task
On day 1: We will explore games using the Ipads on following directions, such as up, down, left, right, north, south, east, and west.
On day 2: We will work with partners to create a map to by picking an object to locate in the classroom examples it can be the teacher's desk, the block area etc. The students are to create a map starting at the door of the classroom to their designated area.
On day 3: We will learn about different mapping symbols to be added to the maps that were created with their partners. The students will also work with their partners on their Ipads to explore a mapping adventure of an island.
On day 4: We will play a game of passing the globes in which the students will pass the globe around as music plays and when the music stops that student will pick an animal from the board in which we can explore by using the globe where that animal lives.
On day 5: On the final day their will be stuff animals place around the room in which the students will work in groups to create a big map using their mapping symbols on the two animals they are assigned.
Process
Day 1: The students are asked " How do maps help us?". If you were to give me directions on how you enter the classroom to reach your desk " What are some key words that you would use to give direction? The words are then recorded on the board for everyone to see.
The students will then be given their IPads which they will play a game located on www.pbs.kids
Day 2: On the following day the students will work with a partner to create a map of a specific destination in the classroom. The students will also include their key vocabulary words into their map. The students will them work on a following directions game using their Ipads.
Day 3: The students will look at maps of different locations. One map being the map of their school , another of their community and the last of the United States. The students will then discuss the different mapping symbols and how they are use. The class will work together using the Smart board to explore Adventure Island.
Day 4: The students will play a game as they learn about the globe. The students will pass around the globe while music is being played and where ever the music stops they student must look at the board and select an animal and find its location on the globe.
Day 5: On the final day some of the stuff animals will be place around the room and the students must work in groups to create a map of where the three different animals are located in the classroom. The students will also watch a video about the different animals on the SmartBoard.
Evaluation
The students will be evaluated by drawing a map of the route they take to get from home to school. The students are also to use different symbols to represent things along their route. The students will also receive extra credit if they use some of their vocabulary words on their map.
Conclusion
The student's have learned so much this week about maps and how maps can be useful resources. The students have went on different adventures while working with partners as well as in small groups. The purpose is to see how following directions and locating things can be useful to traveling the world.

This lesson was designed teach children about mapping throughout the world. The students were given relatable destinations to map so that they would be familiar with the location. The students were also asked to explore the world and seeing where animals live throughout the world. There were key vocabulary words the students were also to learn in order to develop a better understanding of following and giving directions.
