X Marks the Spot (Solving Systems of Equations)

Introduction

Argh matey! Today what you didn't realize was that when you walked into class you became a pirate! To find the buried treasure, we'll use the clues these highly mathematical pirates left us to pinpoint its exact location.

Task

Your task will be to pinpoint where the buried treasure is.  To do this you will be solving the equations in the Process section. The first part of our process is review, the second will help us find the buried treasure.

Process

Make sure you have this worksheet. Ms. Leneway has provided it for you.

1. Write your pirate name on your worksheet.

Okay, get ready for an adventure. But first let's review a little how to solve systems of equations.

2. Watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNkPKv0OTGI.

     Answer the questions that go with it on the worksheet. The answers come directly

      from the video!

Okay, now that our memory is refreshed let's move on to our challenge!

To find our locations, we will first solve systems of equations to find the coordinates. Once you've solved all 6 systems of equations for your latitude and longitude coordinates you will plug those into Google Maps to find the locations in the world where our buried treasure may be.

3. Location 1

To find our first location, we will solve the following system of equations. You may use your calculator to help you graph it.

                      y=31-6x

                      y= -3x-23

4. Location 2

To find our second location, we will solve the following system of equations. You may use your calculator to help you graph it.

                        y=x-82

                        y= -.5x+14

5. Location 3

To find our third location, we will solve the following system of equations. You may use your calculator to help you graph it.

                       y=100x+15

                       y=200x-85

6. Location 4

To find our fourth location, we will solve the following system of equations. You may use your calculator to help you graph it.

                       y=-4x+28

                       y= -7x-50

7. Location 5

To find our fifth location, we will solve the following system of equations. You may use your calculator to help you graph it.

                      y= -2x+8

                      y= x+65

8. Location 6

To find our final location, we will solve the following system of equations. You may use your calculator to help you graph it.

                    y= -x+53

                    y= (1/4)x-7

9.Copy down all your coordinates in the chart provided for step 9. This will make your life easier.

Now that we have all of our coordinates, here comes the fun part. Go to Google Maps. Once at Google Maps, type in the coordinates from your first location. Hit enter. Then zoom out until you can see the country name. Do this for each of your countries. Record your country name on the space provided on the worksheet.

10. The treasure is in the only country that is not an island. Put a star next to that country on your chart.

Evaluation

This is how the Webquest will be scored. It is worth a total of 22 points with a possible of four extra credit points if the final location is correct. (In the gradebook, this score will be divided by 2.)

1. none

2. 3 points, one for each part

3-8. 3 points each, one for the correct coordinates, one for checking these coordinates in each equation

9. 1 point for complting chart

10. 4 points XC for the correct location

Conclusion

Congrats! You're now a real pirate and found the treasure!
