Junk food vs. Healthy food

Introduction

    The audience for this WebQuest is grade 3 students, and the theme of WebQuest today is “Junk food vs. Healthy food”. The problem of healthy eating is growing day to day, and learning to eat correctly should be taught from early years. Children must know that street food or fast food lacks the nutrients and minerals that people must consume to be healthy and beautiful, which can lead to bad results. The way of being healthy and living a long, happy life is in everybody’s hands!

Task

       The tasks of this WebQuest will help students learn to work collaboratively and be thinkers, communicators, knowledgeable, and inquirers.

       The knowledge of eating healthy food will change their mind about consuming food and to think of the connection between nature and humanity, why vegetables are important for people, why is it crucial to support our body with nutrients and minerals, and how organisms live.

       The knowledge of the construction of the human body will give them a chance to start to evaluate the human body in a biological way, the importance of not gaining too much weight in childhood, what effects junk food has on the skin, and so on.

Process

WebQuest is going to be held a week, which means 3 lessons, and the final result will be produced at the next (the 5th) lesson. Each lesson lasts 40 min., starts with the recapping of the previous material, and continues with the new lesson.

 

Lesson 1. Introducing junk food and why it is not good for everybody. Students are going to watch a video, and then discuss it with their teacher answering the following questions:

  1. What is a nutrient?
  2. Why junk food is not good for you to eat? Tell three reasons for the drawbacks of eating junk food the spider mentioned in the video.

The next video that must be watched that day is about McDonald’s, and the fact about it. After watching the video, students are going to work in groups and answer the questions, and present their answers with pictures or in a written form:

  1. How many calories does a big mac have?
  2. What are the rules does Morgon Spurlock have?
  3. What happens to Morgon Spurlock after eating McDonald’s for 30 days?

The next activity for students is to identify junk food and nutritious food, given the links for the game, students will be able to get access and play the game having fun and studying at the same time.

Lesson 2. The lesson is going to be in a debate form, the students will be separated into 2 groups by choosing random cards laid upside down according to colors, red and yellow. After, the red group has to be for, and yellow is against Advertising fast food. For getting the material and having the general idea students will be given the link to the webpage for reading the article. Then in groups, students present reasons for and against.

Lesson 3.

Students will be introduced to the text online given the link, about the effects of fast food on the Body, and do activity, drawing the drawbacks on the body. The students will be given worksheets with a simple picture of the body of a human, where they have to draw the drawbacks of junk food. Pupils in two groups will have cooperative activities and have fun.

In conclusion, I have to mention that eating is an integral part of humanity, and life is in its hands, you decide to eat healthy or unhealthy food, to consequences that lead to each type of eating are there, save your life and live happily!

In the activities, where students have to get the link for online sources and complete the final project about the awareness of eating healthy food, the students are required to be skillful in using the internet and their devices, to show the ability to locate and look for accurate information.

This is the skill that students won without a doubt, the ability to be creative in presenting their ideas gives a chance to use the full potential of the digital tools in the classrooms, which means full engagement and raising the creativity of students as well.
