Functions and Relations

Introduction

"If you say everybody in the eighth-grade class belongs to an eighth-grade club, you're describing a relation. For every eighth-grader you name, you can point to at least one club. And, for every eighth-grade club you name, you can point to at least one class member.

If you described one of these clubs by calling it The Club That John Belongs To, you might have a hard time making yourself understood if John belongs to more than one club. But if John belongs to only one club, this relation is always clear and we call the relation a function."

Task

Your mission, which you must accept, is to THOROUGHLY read the instructions on the "Process" tab and complete all of the tasks assigned for this webquest.  Answer all of the questions NEATLY on the workshseet provided and turn the COMPLETED sheet in to Ms. Svajda by the end your class today. Don't worry... you can do this, and you're going to do it right! Why, you may ask? Because I know what my kids are capable of doing, and THIS...you can do!

Process

All answers to the tasks must be reflected on your papers that will be turned in to Ms. Svajda.  Task 1 - Watch the videos found here and here.  Then answer the questions on the worksheet.                Task 2 - Answer the following questions on the worksheet:               1. Create an example of a set of values that would be an example of a function. Do this in TABLE FORM.               2. Create an example of a set of values that would NOT be an example of a function. Do this by making a list of the ORDERED PAIRS. (Must have  at least FOUR ordered pairs) Task 3 - Look at all the images of the graphs attached below. State on the worksheet whether or not each is a function by using the words "YES" or "NO".  **Hint: Use the Vertical Line Rule to determine if it is a function or not.

Evaluation

Your grade depends on how well you do on the worksheet so do your best.  You are one smart cookie and I know you can do this!

Conclusion

Hand in your paper at the end of the hour if you finish it.  If not, you can take on a second day to finish up.  Either way, hand in your worksheet when you finish.
