Close your eyes. What do you think of when you think of when you hear the word, "Indian"?

Do you think of indians in movies or on tv?

In this lesson, we are going to be learning all about three different types (tribes-groups of indians in a particular area) of indians that could be found in the United States. 

Task

We will be locating three different tribes of American Indians.

The three tribes are the: Pueblo Indians, Powhatan Indians, and the Lakota Indians.

Have you ever heard of any of these indian tribes?

Objective:

Given information on the American Indian Tribes, the student will play an interactive game and be albe to locate the Pueblo, Lakota, and Powhatan Indian tribes using certain clues and a state-labeled United States Map.

Process

Let's identify these 3 tribes!

Powhatan Indians

This group of indians is located in the area of the united states where we currently have the state Virgnina.

Do you know where this state is? Lets take a look at a map and locate this state.

Now lets see if you found the region!

The Powhatan indians are found in the part of the map that is green. Only the very far right sidein Virginia. Were you right?

We call this the eastern region of the United States. 

Lakota Indians

This group of indians is located in the area of the united states where we currently have the states North Dakota, South Dakota, Nabraska, Wyoming, Montana.

Do you know where these states are? Lets take a look at a map and locate these states.

Now lets see if you found the region!

The area indicated in yellow, orange, and red is the area native to the Lakota Indians. Were you right?

We call this the northern region of the United States. 

Pueblo Indians

This group of indians is located in the area of the united states where we currently have the states New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas.

Do you know where those states are? Lets take a look at a map and I want you to locate these states.

 

Now Let's see if you found the region!

The area indicated in yellow is the area native to the Pueblo Indians. Were you right?

We call this the southwest region of the United States.

Now I would like you to point to the different regions on the map and identify which tribe is located in each region without looking at the information above.

Evaluation

I will be evaluating the students' mastery of the material by their ability to point/draw on the map, indicating each region and tribe name correctly, name the states where the tribe is located, as well as naming the region of the United States. This will be worth 12 points total.

Conclusion

Pretend you are a Pueblo Indian. How do you act? Where do you live? Practice being a Pueblo indian to someone at home and explain to them all you know about your tribe.
