A Journey Through Your Digestive System

Introduction

Welcome to our Human Digestive System Webquest!

WARNING: Make sure you grab a bite to eat, this Webquest may make you hungry.

In this Webquest, students will:

  • Explore the physical and chemical aspects of the human digestive system
  • Learn about how in individual organisms, food moves through a series of chemical reactions in which it is broken down and rearranged to form new molecules, to support growth, or to release energy (MS-LS1-7)

To complete this Webquest and obtain full points, you must: 1) take the Pre-Webquest Survey, 2) read through the interactive storyboards, 3) watch the video, and 4) answer the following Post-Webquest questions. Good luck and have fun!

Task

Task #1: Take Pre-Webquest Survey

Click on the link below to take the open Google Survey. On the Google Survey, answer: What do you already know about the digestive system? What would you like to know about the digestive system?

Task #2: Read Interactive Storyboard + View Physical Digestive System Diagram

The human digestive system can be thought about in two ways: the physical side and chemical side. Read the following storyboard to learn about the physical digestive system. Included is a link to a diagram that shows all the physical organs involved, and describes the physical processes involved in the digestive system. Pay special attention to key vocabulary words: (digestion, absorption, peristalsis, secretion, enzyme, acid, bile, saliva).

Task #3: Watch Chemical Digestive System Video

Now that you have thought about what you already know and read up on some information about how we physically digest our food, watch this interesting video that shows you the chemical side of our amazing digestive system in action! Please make sure to enable the subtitles feature as you watch the video below by clicking "cc".

Remember: if you missed something or aren't sure about a certain concept, you can always rewatch clips or the whole video!

Show What You Know

Congratulations! You made it through A Journey Through Your Digestive System. Now it's your turn to do the teaching. Select 1 organ in the digestive system and create a poster that includes:

  • a nicely colored image of the organ
  • clearly labeled title
  • your organ's function in the human digestive system (both physically and chemically)
  • neat handwriting in clearly visible dark marker

Be prepared to present your poster to the class. Way to go!
