Introduction
Welcome!
We have been exploring Blues music and its roots in Mississippi. Today, let's dive deeper into the history, legacy, and migration of Blues music.
Lucky me! I have a class full of music scholars who are able to teach each other the legacy of Blues music. I know that you are experts in the study of hip-hop music and culture. But, did you know that Blues music and culture played a huge role in the development of soul, R&B, hip-hop music and many types of modern music.
In order to help teach your class, you will be doing some research to learn more about where the Blues came from, how it developed, where it developed, and what we inherited from the Blues style of music.
You will select one blues artist and share what you learn about your artist with the class in a PowerPoint presentation.
Happy journeying!
Task
You will be selecting a blues artist about whom you would like to learn more. You will discover when and where they lived, as well as how their musical career began and developed. You will also learn to describe their musical performing style and how they contributed to the development of the blues (as well as music of later time periods). You will create a PowerPoint presentation to share what you have learned about your artist with the rest of the class.
Process
First, you will need to visit the recommended websites to gather information about the Blues Era. Follow the guided notes for these websites and be sure to answer the questions based on the websites you explore. These websites include:
- What is the Blues? Read this essay before moving.
- MS History Now: MS Blues This essay is a good resource for the migration, legacy, and impact of blues music on modern music.
- Mississippi Blues Trail Website This website will take you through the state of Mississippi and the prominent blues artists and dates.
- Blues Road Trip Take a road trip through the migration of the blues. Follow the music's travel from its birthplace in the MS Delta to its place in music around the world.
- A Short History of the Blues Trace the path of blues music and how it has shaped more modern styles of music.
- Blues Terms Glossary This is a resource to help understand some of the terms you will come across in your research.
- National Public Radio Delta Blues Database Read about several Delta style blues musicians and hear some of their recordings.
Second, select an artist about whom you have read. Use the Information Organizer below to record what you have learned about your artist. You will be turning in this graphic organizer.
Third, organize your information in a PowerPoint presentation that will make it interesting for your classmates to learn about your blues artist. Make sure you include a photo or graphic and an audio clip (if available) so that we can hear your artist.
Conclusion
Your quest is now complete. You have accomplished a great deal. Hopefully you now have a better understanding of the impact the Blues has on today's music. What would music be like today if that influence wasn't present? When you listen to your favorite music, listen to the lyrics; think about the reasons why they were written. Then think about where and when it all started, about the people who sang the songs. How similar is today's rap music to yesterday's Blues music? Compare and contrast the two styles. What do you think?
