Body systems

Introduction

The WebQuest you are about to begin will be about the human body and its functions. Every system in our body has an importance and it is up to you to present to the class what the function you are assigned to signify. The topics for each system of the body will include: integumentary system (skin), cardiovascular (circulatory) system, respiratory system, nervous system, digestive system, muscular system, skeletal system, and immune system (keep in mind there are more systems to our body, but I chose the most common to what we are familiar with).

You will all be considered med-students learning about your assigned system, in detail, as if that will be your profession. For example, if assigned the integumentary system, you might be studying to be a dermatologist. As a group, you are all competing with other groups in the class about which system is the most important and why. We all know each organ in our body is important for survival, but give us in detail why it is the most important system to have.

Task

In a group of 3-4 people, you are to research the specific body system you are assigned and take important notes on it prior to moving on.  Other than what the system does, include how it functions and how it is important for our body for survival. Be as thorough as possible. You will be graded on how much information you present to the class, as well as your Microsoft PowerPoint presentation and if your reasons for being the most important body system is persuasive. (Do not just say, “The cardiovascular system is important because it involves the heart”).

Process
  • Form in groups of 3–4 people.
  • I will assign you a body system.
  • You are to use the websites provided to do your research.
  • Take detailed notes and have a diagram or flow chart for a visual aid.
  • Once your group has gathered enough information, you are to put together a PowerPoint presentation.
    • Example: Your slides must include what your system is and what it does.
    • Additional slides and information is needed as well.
    • Include visuals or illustrations.
    • If presenting a video — nothing over 2 minutes.
  • Present your body system with persuasiveness.
  • At the end of your presentation, I will ask your group “Why is your body system have the most importance in our body? Do we need your body system to survive? Explain.”
  • Remember you are graded on the amount of information you know and present to the class.
  • Equal amount of group effort should be seen. Not one person doing all the work.

Conclusion

Congrats! You all have learned some of the major systems of the human body and their functions. Not only have you taught yourselves, but you also taught the class. Your group persuaded the class as well as myself, the importance of your body system. Well done! As you come to the end of the project, what have you learned as an individual? Does every body system serve a purpose in our everyday lifestyle? Can we live without one of them?
I hope you all enjoyed this learning aspect of the human body and opened your eyes in ways to perceive it as a necessity and enhanced your knowledge of your own body.

Teacher Introduction

Welcome! This WebQuest is a group assignment providing detailed information about the human body and its major systems. The students will be using the Internet and the provided websites to use for their research. To present their specified body system, they are to present to the class a PowerPoint presentation. Including in this presentation, they are to persuade to the class, as well as yourself, why their body system is more important than the rest of the systems in our body.

The following list of body systems were assigned to groups: integumentary system (skin), cardiovascular (circulatory) system, respiratory system, nervous system, digestive system, muscular system, skeletal system, and immune system. You may opt out or add more systems depending on your class or group size.
