Similarity Webquest

Introduction

You and your friends are building a treehouse, but you do not know the height of the tree to make a ladder, and all you have is a tape measure, a pencil and some paper. You may seem hopeless, but these are just the materials to find the height of the tree to build and make that ladder by using a process called similarities!

Task

In this webquest you will learn how to use similarity in real life, in this case to find the height of the tree to build a ladder and get into that treehouse! You are going to need paper, pencil, tape measure, and partner.

Process

Once you have all the materials and a partner, go outside and find a tree, once you found a good sized tree, take out your tape measure and measure the shadow that it casts. once you have the measure of the shadow, sketch a tree on your paper (if you are artisticly challenged draw a triangle), and draw a shadow, put the length of the shadow of the tree on the paper.

Once you are done with the first step, get your partner, and have him/her measure your height, and shadow that you are casting. once you have done that, get the same piece of paper you drew the tree on, and sketch a person (if you are artisticly challenged draw a triangle), and for the height, write down your height, and then draw the shadow. once you have drawn the shadow, write down the measure of your shadow.

You should now have two drawings or triangles, the tree should have the measure of the shadow, and the person should have a height and shadow.

find a spot on the paper to write a proportion. once you have found a place, write the proportion, heres a website to help you write a proportion if you forgot [http://www.math.com/school/subject1/lessons/S1U2L4DP.html.]

Congratulations, you have found the height of the tree, now go out and get your supplies to build that ladder and get into that treehouse!

 Following Directions

I did not follow directions and had a difficult time understanding what to do.

I followed directions, but had a difficult time staying on task and had to be reminded at times

I followed all directions and was always on task.

 Working With Your Partner

I was unable to work well with my partner.  I did not help my partner

I had difficulties with my partner, but I helped my partner somewhat.

I had no problems working with my partner.

Overall Quality

It was sloppy and missing parts.

The report was neat and all parts were included.

The report was neat and all parts were included.

Conclusion

You have now figured out how to use similarity in real life, now answer some  of these questions on the same paper

1.) What is Similarity?

2.) How is this related to similarity?

3.) What did you learn?

Credits

My name is joey I am in 9th grade and 14 years old, I am in Mrs.Cousins geometry class, I love to play football and wrestle. the reason I wrote this webquest is because, I thought it was a good way to show how similarities can be used in real life. I didnt think geometry could be used so much in our everyday lives.
