Leaves Change Color

Introduction

Why do leaves change color in the fall? There are many different ways to find out why they change.  One great place to search for the information is on the internet.

Task

Your task will be to help Miss Henry understand how and why leaves change color in the fall.  Why are leaves green?   How do leaves change color?   What three main ingredients are in "tree food"? These questions will all be answered in your search.  You will find a special internet site to gather the information.  Once you answer the questions you will discover how and why leaves change color.

Process

Now that you are ready to begin I have the first task for you.  Click on the questions below one at a time, return to this page after each question is answered, and you will discover the information Needed.

Student can put two parts of the process in proper sequence

Students can put three parts of the process in proper sequence

Student can properly put all steps of the process in correct sequential order

Conclusion

Congratulations! You have discovered that leaves are green because of the chlorophyll packages in the leaves.  The chlorophyll uses water, gas in the air (carbon dioxide), and sunlight to make food for the leaves.  Leaves don't really change color, when the green chlorophyll disappears, the yellow xanthophyll and the orange carotene can now be seen!  Finally your research solves, "Why leaves change color in the fall", the tree is preparing for winter!
