This WebQuest is designed for third-grade students and focuses on solving math word problems in multiple ways. Students will practice using pictures, number lines, equations, words, repeated addition, and models to show their thinking. This connects to Florida Standard MA.K12.MTR.2.1, which focuses on students demonstrating understanding by representing problems in multiple ways.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this WebQuest, students will be able to identify different ways to represent a math word problem, solve third-grade word problems using three different strategies, explain how each strategy works, compare their strategies with group members, justify which strategy is the clearest, and create a Canva presentation to show their work.

These objectives connect to Bloom’s Taxonomy because students will remember and understand different strategies, apply them to solve problems, analyze by comparing strategies, evaluate by choosing the clearest method, and create a final presentation.

Task

Students will work in small groups to solve multiple third-grade math word problems provided by the teacher. For each problem, students will show three different ways to solve it using pictures, number lines, equations, words, repeated addition, or models. Students will also compare the strategies, explain why the strategies work, and decide which method is the clearest. After solving the problems, students will create a short Canva presentation to show their strategies and explain their thinking.

This task connects to MA.K12.MTR.2.1 because students are representing math problems in multiple ways to demonstrate understanding.

Process

Students will work in small groups to solve multiple third-grade math word problems provided by the teacher. The purpose of providing the problems is to allow students to focus on the problem-solving process instead of spending time searching for problems on their own.

To begin, each student will solve the word problem using a strategy they feel comfortable with. After completing their own work, students will share their solution with their group members and compare the different strategies used. This step allows students to see that the same problem can be represented and solved in more than one way.

Next, group members will discuss the strategies they used and choose three methods that best explain the problem. Students will analyze the different strategies, explain why each method works, and justify which strategy is the clearest for their final presentation.

Each student will have a specific role within the group. The Problem Solver will help solve and check the math problems. The Strategy Explainer will write the explanations for each method. The Designer will organize the Canva presentation and include visuals. The Presenter will help share the final project with the class.

Students will use Google Docs as an asynchronous tool to organize their work. In the shared document, students can assign roles, write notes, add explanations, and communicate with group members if they are working at different times. After organizing their work, students will create a Canva presentation that shows each word problem and the three different ways they solved it.

The materials and media used in this WebQuest include teacher-provided word problems, Google Docs, Canva, drawings, number lines, equations, and models. These materials are appropriate for third-grade students because they allow students to solve, explain, and present their thinking in different ways.

This process supports the four learning styles. Visual learners can use pictures, models, number lines, and Canva slides. Auditory learners can discuss strategies with their group and present their work to the class. Reading and writing learners can write explanations in Google Docs and on the presentation slides. Kinesthetic learners can use drawings or hands-on models to represent the problems.

The process also connects to the eight forms of intelligence because students are able to use different strengths during the project. Students use logical-mathematical intelligence when they solve the word problems and choose strategies. They use linguistic intelligence when they write explanations and present their thinking. Spatial intelligence is used when students create pictures, number lines, models, and Canva slides. Interpersonal intelligence is included through group work because students have to share ideas, listen to others, and make decisions together. Intrapersonal intelligence is included when students choose a strategy they understand best and reflect on which method helped them. Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence can be used when students create hands-on models or drawings to represent a problem. Musical intelligence can be included through repeated steps or patterns that help students remember how to solve problems. Naturalistic intelligence can be included through real-world word problems that connect math to everyday situations.

Evaluation

Students’ projects will be evaluated using a rubric. The teacher will look at how well students solve the word problems, show three different strategies for each problem, explain their thinking, work with their group members, and complete an organized Canva presentation.

The rubric will also evaluate higher-order thinking skills. Students will be assessed on how they compare different strategies, analyze how each method solves the problem, justify which strategy is the clearest, and create a final presentation to explain their work. This evaluation connects to MA.K12.MTR.2.1 because students are being graded on how well they represent math problems in multiple ways.

 

Conclusion

This WebQuest helps third-grade students practice solving math word problems by using more than one strategy. Students will work together, compare their thinking, and create a Canva presentation to show three different ways to solve each problem. This project supports MA.K12.MTR.2.1 because students are demonstrating understanding by representing problems in multiple ways.
