Introduction

Every sentence has to have a verb. In this webquest you will be working to:

Identify the correct use of verbs ( action/linking) within context.

 

Task

Use the following steps to play a game on identifying verbs, complete the Graphic Organizer about Verbs, create an educational poster about verbs, and complete the practice sheet.

Verbs – Outline Notes

 

  1. What is a Verb?
    1. A verb is a word used to express an action, a condition, or a state of being.
      1. The 2 main kinds of verbs are action verbs and linking verbs.
      2. Both action and linking verbs can be used with helping verbs.
    2. Action Verbs
      1. An action verb tells what the subject does.
      2. The action may be physical or mental.
      3. Example (physical): She rides motorcycles.
      4. Example (mental): I prefer bicycles.
    3. Linking Verbs
      1. A linking verb links the subject of the sentence to a word in the predicate.
      2. The most common linking verbs are forms of the verb Be and verbs that express condition.
      3. Forms of Be: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been
      4. Verbs that Express Condition: look, smell, feel, sound, taste, grow, appear, become, seem
        1. Examples
        2. That is perfume.
        3. It smells flowery.

D. Helping Verbs

  1. Helping verbs help the main verb (action or linking) express action or show time.
  2. They are combined with main verbs to form verb phrases.
  3. Common Helping Verbs
  4. Forms of Have: has, have, had
  5. Forms of Do: do, does, did
  6. Forms of Be: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been
  7. Others: could, should, would, may, might,  must, can, shall, will
    1. Examples
    2. He has planted the crops.
    3. The milk may smell sour.

STEP 3: Create a poster explaining what a verb is, identifying the different types of verbs, and provide examples of verbs.  Use a Microsoft Publisher template.

STEP 4: Complete the Verbs Practice Sheet.

Evaluation

Your poster will be scored according the following:

THE POSTER CORRECTLY DEFINES WHAT A VERB IS  25 POINTS

THE POSTER INCLUDES APPROPRIATE EXAMPLES OF VERBS 25 POINTS

THE POSTER ACCURATELY EXPLAINS THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF VERBS 25 POINTS

THE POSTER IS VISUALLY APPEALING 25 POINTS

Conclusion

Verbs play an important role in sentences.  It is important to be able to use them correctly.
