"Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" WebQuest

A mongoose, Rikki-tikki-tavi, comes to live with an English family in their bungalow in colonial India. Two cobras—Nag and Nagaina—live in the garden surrounding the bungalow and threaten the lives of Rikki-tikki’s human family.  Through a series of battles, Rikki-tikki-tavi kills Nag and Nagaina, protecting his human family and winning their trust and affection.

Task

You will complete a webquest to learn more information about certain ascpects from the short story. You should use the web sites provided to locate information. You will be using what you know about short story elements and what you learn about "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" to create a brochure using Microsoft Publisher.  

Process

FIRST:  Make sure you have read the story before you begin.  Then open Microsoft Publisher on your computer.  Choose a format for your brochure.  It needs to be a trifold or 3 panel brochure.  

SECOND: Create the first page of your brochure.  The third panel on page 1 will be the front of your brochure.  This page needs the story title, the author's name, your name, an appropriate image for this story, and class period.

THIRD:  Go to page 2 of your brochure.  This panel will deal with Setting.  You need to illustrate your understanding of setting by describing the setting of "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" and its significance to the story.  You will need to do some research about India. Include any relevant images.

FOURTH: The second panel on page 2 will focus on Characters.  You will need to describe the main character and any significant minor characters. Include any relevant images. 

FIFTH:  The third panel on page 2 will focus on Plot and Theme.  You will need to explain each element of a plot diagram as it relates to the story.  You will also need to specify the theme of this story.  Include any relevant images.

SIXTH: Go back to page one of your brochure.  The first panel on this page will focus on Conflict and Point of  View.  Describe the conflict in the story and determine whether it is internal or external and what type of conflict it is.  You will also determine from what point of view the story is told. Include any relevant images.

SEVENTH:  Panel 2 of page 1 will be the back of your brochure.  It will focus on Literary Elements such as Symbolism, Foreshadowing/Flashback, and Figurative Language that you find as you read the story.  Include any relevant images.

Evaluation

Your Rubric for this project is as follows:

All six panels have the necessary information.

Images are appropriate.

Complete sentences are used.

Conclusion

Review your brochure.  Double check to see that all information is included.  For extra credit, see if you can use any of your vocabulary words in your writing.  Bold these terms.  Print your brochure.  It should print as two sheets of paper.
