Its All About Nouns

Introduction

 Nouns

Can you imagine a language that doesn't include words for people, places, things, or ideas? Of course you can't! Nouns (people, places, things, and ideas) are important to our lives. We would never be able to communicate without them. In fact, try to talk to a friend for one minute without using a noun. Go on, try it! You couldn't do it, could you? Unfortunately, Mr. Action has done a terrible deed. He has stolen all of the nouns from our classroom. The only remaining nouns are on the Internet. It is your job to find Mr. Action and restore the nouns back to our classroom's speech.

Task

Your mission is to travel through the different communities of nouns.  (abstract, common, proper, concrete, collective)

When you are finished with your mission, you will complete a final
project to share with the class about what you learned.

You will discover that there are many different types of nouns and that
nouns are easy to find in a sentence.

Process

This is a two part activity.

I. In your hunt to find the missing nouns.  Complete the following worksheets in Language Handbook Worksheets, pgs 1,2 pronouns pg22

II.  After you have completed your travels through the noun communities, your
group will decide on how you want to show the class what you have
learned about each of the nouns.  You will present your project to the class.  Keep in mind that your project should TEACH the other students about the different types of nouns.  You may
choose 2 or three from the following:

1.  Poster showing definitions and examples of the types of nouns.

2.  PowerPoint that teaches about the types of nouns. (Keep in mind, you only
have two class days to prepare!)

3.  Short Story using at least two of each type of noun (must be at least one
page double-spaced and words should be highlighted/labeled)

4.  Rap, poem, song about the different types of nouns (will be performed in front of
the class.

5.  Create a boardgame about nouns.

6.  Homemade video (on your own time with your own resources) about the
types of nouns.  Must be at least 5 minutes long.  You will plan your video
during class time.

7.  Create a quiz with an answer key.  Your quiz may be used for next year's
students!

8.  Create your own idea.  It must be approved by Ms. Mays.

I know that you are up to the task!  Good luck noun hunters!
