Internet Safety: Protecting Yourself!

Introduction

Using the internet is a great and fun way to learn! But... you have to learn how to do it safely! Doing things and talking to people online is different than doing it face to face. When you meet someone in person, you can at least see who you are talking to.  If you talk to someone online, it is hard to know who is on the other side of the computer, cell phone, tablet, or other device. Also, whatever you put out there on the internet stays there, even if you think you erased it! The goal of this lesson is to learn how to be safe.

Task

You are going to work as a group to identify ways to be safe while using the internet. Some activities you will do alone, but most of them you will do with your group.

Process

To begin, watch the video.

* What are three things you think are important in the video you just watched. Write them down, and explain why you thought they were important. After you are done, discuss what you wrote down with your group members.

* Did everybody write down the same things? (yes or no)

* What was the same and/or different about the answers from your group?

Was there any new information in the link above? If so, what was it? (Write this down as a group.)

Next, click on the link below and make your own list of safety rules for using the internet. When you are done, do not forget to print it.

Conclusion

Class online safety plan:

Only access websites provided by or approved by your teacher.

Do not share personal information with anyone on the internet. Use only the user name given to you by your teacher. Do not share pictures unless approved by the teacher.

Do not put information onto the internet that you do not want everyone else to see. Assume that everyone can see everything.

If something does not feel right, talk to your teacher about it immediately. It is better to be safe than sorry.

If you feel you are being threatened or bullied, do not respond. Show your teacher what the other person sent you, and she will decide what the appropriate course of action is.

Being safe while using the internet is a big priority in this class. We will work together throughout the year to practice safety and to know what to do if anyone feels they are unsafe or being bullied.
