Introduction

Jamaica is known worldwide for its vibrant culture, music, and dance. Many of our cultural dances originated from African traditions brought by enslaved Africans, while European customs and traditions influenced others. Dances such as Kumina, Dinki Mini, and Quadrille continue to be performed today and help preserve Jamaica’s cultural heritage.

Throughout this WebQuest, you will explore these dances and discover how they continue to shape Jamaican society.



 

Task

The Ministry of Culture has selected you and your classmates to create a Cultural Dance Exhibition for visitors from around the world.

Your mission is to:

  •  Learn about Jamaican cultural dances.
  •  Identify cultural influences found in these dances.
  • Work with your group to complete fun activities.
  •  Create a final display that teaches others about Jamaican cultural dances.

At the end of the WebQuest, your group will present a Cultural Dance Display Board showcasing your findings.

Step 2: Match the Dance

Work with your group to correctly match each dance with its influence.

Step 3: Costume Designers

Choose one cultural dance from the video.

Design a costume that could be worn for the dance.

Your design must include:

  • Colours
  •  Clothing style
  • Accessories
  •  Labels

Write two sentences explaining your design.

 

Step 4: Create a Cultural Dance Poster

Working in groups, create a poster that includes:

  • Name of the dance
  •  Illustration or picture
  •  Cultural influence
  •  Type of music used
  •  Interesting fact

 

Step 5: Dance Performance Challenge

Practice a simple movement inspired by one of the cultural dances shown in the video.

Present your movement to the class.
