Impacts of Flooding

Introduction

As climate change continues to adjust in our regions significantly, various natural disasters are becoming more common in our communities. Flooding is the basis of our research for this web quest which is the most common natural disaster in the United States. You all will work in pairs of two’s on this presentation as you all become little science engineers. Through the creation of this web quest you all will have the opportunity to present information  gathered to representatives from Virgin Islands’s Territorial Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA) as well as members of the community on how members of the community can assist in reducing the impact of floodings for individuals and societies and also inform other members of the community how flooding impacts individuals and societies.

Task

  • Students will be allowed to present a 3-5 minute presentation on how we can reduce flooding in our communities. They will also showcase their knowledge to the representatives by summarizing how natural hazards affect individuals and societies.

  •     Students will be paired in groups of two, and each member will have a particular task to complete for the presentation.

  •  Specific requirements will be given, so students know what exactly is expected of them, so all that would be evaluated would be provided.

Process

Step 1: Students will organize themselves in pairs. At this point, they will brainstorm their general knowledge of flooding. Students will be able to use the school’s computers to record information and gather details for their presentation.

Step 2: Once students have gathered sufficient independent information they will move on to step two. At step two students will navigate through the links provided by their teacher below to collect more information in answering the questions that is the basis of their presentation.

Proof of Cooperation

The pair illustrates no proof of group effort or organization for the presentation.

The pair demonstrates little cohesion. Effort is exerted that illustrates the group worked together a bit.

The pair exemplifies the meaning of group work. The presentation was organized, flowed effortlessly and both individuals were actively involved in the presentation.

Conclusion

Congratulation Students!

The purpose of the project was to give you sixth grade students the opportunity to use their higher order thinking skills and research styles to find solutions on ways to  reduce the impacts of flooding. The ultimate goal of this project was to give you all the opportunity to do independent research, as well as learning to work well with others in an environment that is supportive of group learning. Once the goals were achieved you all would have gained much knowledge on how flooding impacts our society and lives and through intensive research how humans can reduce the impacts this natural disaster has on the community and the lives of individuals. Through this they you all will then be able to bring awareness to the community on how to better prepare for the effects of any possible hurricane.

Author : The creator of this web quest is Shaunda Richardson. I am a student of the University of the Virgin Islands. Listed below are details of the web quest  that teachers can use for their classroom.

Grade: 5th Grade

Subject: Science

Topic: The impacts of flooding on community & human life and how humans can reduce their societal effects.

Standards :

  • Students can use the full range of science and engineering practices to make sense of natural phenomena and solve problems that require understanding how and why the Earth is constantly changing.

  •     A variety of weather hazards result from natural process; humans cannot eliminate weather-related hazards but can reduce their impacts.
