Introduction
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie written by Laura Numeroff is centered on a mouse who is given a cookie and multiple events happen because of this. Once he is given a cookie, he will want a glass of milk and because of drinking milk he will want a straw. This cause and effect continues on for the rest of the book. He receives one thing and this causes him to need another item or activity.

1.RF.1 Develop an understanding of the five components of reading (print concepts, phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and fluency and comprehension) to build foundational reading skills.
The students will be in groups and will be doing different literacy stations based on If You Give a Mouse a Cookie after it is read to the class.
Task
Reading Comprehension:
1.RL.2.2 Retell stories, fables, and fairy tales in sequence.
In order to work on reading comprehension, the students will complete an If You Give a Mouse a Cookie sequence chart. The students will cut the images out and will paste them in the order they happened in the book.

Alphabetic Principle:
1.RF.2.2 Students are expected to build upon and continue applying concepts learned previously. (K.RF.2.2 Recognize that written words are made up of sequences of letters.)
To work on the alphabetic principle, students will complete the worksheet that has multiple pictures and images from the book. They will then color in the letter each item begins with.

Phonics:
1.RF.4.1 Use letter-sound knowledge of single consonants (hard and soft sounds), short and long vowels, consonant blends and digraphs, vowel teams (e.g., ai) and digraphs, and r-controlled vowels to decode phonetically regular words (e.g., cat, go, black, boat, her), independent of context
To work on phonics, students will feed the mouse cookies based on the words containing certain phonics. Students will look at each word on the cookies and determine which words have the phonic sound that is being looked for. It is not shown in the image, but each cookie would have different vocabulary terms from the book.

Phonemic Awareness:
1.RF.3.1 Produce rhyming words.
To work on phonemic awareness rhyming, students will roll a die to see which vocabulary word they are going to be rhyming. They will be given a worksheet with different pictures of vocabulary from the book all assigned a number. When a certain number is rolled, they will write down one rhyming word for that image.

Process
Reading Comprehension Task (Sequencing):
- The students will each get a paper with the numbers boxes and boxes with pictures from the book.
- They will then cut out each individual picture.
- After this, they will glue the pictures in the correct cause and effect order that happened in the book.

Alphabetic Principle task:
- Each student will get a piece of paper with different images and pictures from the book.
- They will then color in the circle of the letter that associates with the image's beginning letter.
- For example, when they see a cookie, they will color in the circle with the letter c.

Phonics Task:
- There will be many cookies with different vocabulary from the book.
- The teacher will pull out a piece of paper written with a certain phonic sound.
- The teacher will say the sound aloud and will assist the student in determining which words have that sounds in it.
- The student will need to feed the mouse with the cookies that fit the phonic sounds.
- For example, if the sound is /m/, then they can only feed the mouse with cookies with m on it.
- After this, the next student will go.

Phonemic Awareness Task (Rhyming):
- Each student will get a piece of paper with different images from the book and each image will have a number by it.
- The students in this station group will partner up.
- When the first student rolls the dice, he/she will try to find one rhyming word for the picture.
- For example, if the student rolls a one and one is a picture of a mop, then the student will write down the rhyming word top.
- After this, the second student in the partnership rolls the dice and this repeats.

Evaluation
At the end of the activity time, students will complete a small formal evaluation sheet. The first question will be an alphabetic principle evaluation with a picture from the book and the students need to circle the letter the item starts with. The second question will be a phonic evaluation where the teacher will say a phonic sound and the students will circle all of the words that have that phonic sound in them. There will only be 4 options and 2 will be correct. Finally, the third question is finding 2 rhyming words for a picture from the book.
The worksheets collected at the end will also give the teacher more insight into the students skills of reading comprehension, alphabetic principle, phonics, and rhyming.
By getting all 3 questions correct, the teacher will know the students understand the concepts they worked on today and they accomplished the tasks. By getting 1 and 2 correct, the teacher knows what is being struggled on to differentiate the lesson next time. For those who got 0 correct, they will need to work one on one with the teacher to determine why they are struggling with these concepts and help them overcome it.
Conclusion
Through these activities, students will become stronger in reading comprehension, the alphabetic principle, phonics, and rhyming in a fun and enjoyable way. By connecting these activities to the book, the students will feel like they are apart of the story and actually giving the mouse the cookie. The evaluation and worksheets will give the teacher the knowledge and understanding to adjust her future lessons to fit the needs of her students. To expand, if they are all struggling with any of these topics, then that is what they will spend more time on next class.
