Introduction
Have you ever finished a story and thought about what it really meant? Like how even though a princess finds her prince, the story was actually about finding herself. Or when a superhero saves the world from a monster, but the real monster was the people who created it.
Authors often hide secret messages in their stories called themes, which is the central idea or underlying message of the story.
Guiding question: How can we uncover hidden messages in stories?
Learning Objective: ELA.4.R.1.2 Explain a stated or implied theme and how it develops, using details, in a literary text.
Task
Students will work in groups to read and analyze a short story. Together, they will discuss possible themes and gather evidence in the text to support their ideas.
Each group will then create a presentation for the class that includes:
- 2-3 sentence summary of the story.
- A statement of the theme they've identified.
- 2 or more pieces of evidence from the text that support the theme.
Process
1. Read the assigned story with your group.
2. As a group, discuss the possible themes (hidden messages or lessons the author is showing).
3. Decide on one central theme with your group.
4. Collect evidence to support your theme. Provide at least 2 quotes directly from the text.
5. Organize your ideas into a presentation for the class. Be sure to include:
- A 2-3 sentence summary of the story.
- Your theme statement.
- Two pieces of evidence to support your theme.
Evaluation
Rubric:
Theme statement - 3 points
Supporting evidence (at least 2 examples) - 3 points
Participation - 4 points
Total Points: 10
Conclusion
Themes are more than just details in a story, they are the big ideas that connect the story to real life. Now that you are able to identify themes and explain how details support them, lets see if you can identify the themes in these short YouTube videos.
