I am sure many of us are aware of the tragic storm Harvey that hit us not too long ago. Harvey was a storm that underwent rapid intensification and quickly became a category 3 hurricane, and over night upgraded to a category 4.

So what is a Hurricane? I will give you guys a brief introduction. A hurricane is a type of storm called a tropical cyclone, which forms over tropical or subtropical waters. Geographically there is " Hurricane Season" that begins June 1 and ends on November 30, although hurricanes can, and have, occurred outside of this time frame.

Hello mini storm chasers!

Your first assignment is to learn about these major storms called 'Hurricanes". First things first; On the next tab, your knowledge of hurricanes will be tested. You're going to be answering five questions to see how much you really know. Your very important job is to work together to find all the answers! Teams will be split into 5 groups. The team that finishes first and has the most correct responses gets to go on their first ever hurricane storm trip!

Now that all the groups have the information, it's ready to get started! Good luck teams, don't get blown away in the storm! Be sure to click the "process" tab to move forward.

Ok my storm chasers here are 5 Simple questions that will teach you the basics about hurricanes!

  1. What is a Hurricane?
  2. How many categories can a hurricane have?
  3. When does Hurricane season start?
  4. Who names Hurricanes?
  5. Who are the "Hurricane Hunters"?

Okay Storm Chasers, hopefully these brief questions taught you something about hurricanes. If you wrote  a tropical storm for question 1 you are correct. Hurricanes form from a tropical storm cyclone with a low-pressure center and strong winds. For questions 2 if you answered 5 you are correct. The category definds the speeds of the winds and at what rates will the hurricane hit as. For question 3 if you answered June-November you are correct. These months are the most common months that hurricanes decide to struck land. Question 4 Who names hurricanes, the people in charge of this are called the world meteorological center. They have a list of female and male names and they just choose one. Last and not least hurricane hunters, these people are very well crazy, they fly into the center of the tropical storm or hurricane. Thank to them we get to prepare for future hurrianes like we prepared for hurricane harvey.

Now to take a look at what a hurricane trajectory looks like..

This picture above show the trajectory that the hurricane took place. Its a good picture to help yall know around what time it will touch land and what the category the hurricane is going to touch land in. After the hurricane touches land usually the strength of the hurricane lowers, but not in all cases. During harvey the hurricane touch land in Port Aransas, Tx , but the strong part of the hurricane hit Houston something unbelievable. I hope these questions and picture helped you touch base on hurricanes and what they do. Until next time Storm chasers.

Below are some resources i though were useful in case you ever come across a hurricane.
