Human Development and Sexual Health

Introduction

Welcome to your first webquest on Human Development and Sexual Health. This webquest is intended for you to learn through completing a series of tasks which require a positive and mature mindset. Read, listen, and watch the content carefully. Have fun! 

Task

During this webquest, you will be watching, reading, and analyzing various forms of text. The purpose of this webquest is to learn and assess the various effects that stereotypes, including assumptions regarding gender roles, sexual orientation, gender expression, race, ethnicity or culture, mental health, and abilities, have on an individual’s self-concept, social inclusion, and relationships with others. 

Overall Expectation: 

C3. demonstrate the ability to make connections that relate to health and well-being – how their choices and behaviours affect both themselves and others, and how factors in the world around them affect their own and others’ health and well-being

Specific Expectation: 

C3.3 assess the effects of stereotypes, including homophobia and assumptions regarding gender roles and expectations, sexual orientation, gender expression, race, ethnicity or culture, mental health, and abilities, on an individual’s self-concept, social inclusion, and relationships with others, and propose appropriate ways of responding to and changing assumptions and stereotypes [PS, CT]

 

Process

Task #1:

a) Click on the following link and read through the statistics on Body Image, Self Esteem & Parental Influence. http://www.heartofleadership.org/statistics-on-body-image-self-esteem-parental-influence/

b) Select TWO statistics that surprised you the most.

c) Go to Google Docs and write a paragraph describing why those two statistics surprised you. 

 

Task #2: 

a) Watch the following "Doll Test" video on Youtube.

b) With a partner or small group, discuss the concerns that arise from this video.

 

Task #3:

a) Look at the following picture. What kind of message do you think it is trying to give?

b) Think of 10-20 positive words that describe the individuals below. 

c) Go to https://wordart.com/create and create a word art. Be sure to check your spelling.

Task #4: 

a) Watch the following video on "YouTube"

b) In Google Docs, write a detailed thank you letter to a significant man/men or woman/women in your life (it can be a friend, parent/guardian, grandparent, teacher, relative, neighbour).  Tell them what you are thankful for, and why. 

Task #5:

a) Watch the following YouTube video:

b) Create a poster illustrating the importance of EQUALITY. You can create it using an online tool, or by hand.  Be creative. 

Task #6: 

a) Read the following scenario: 

You’ve noticed someone teasing one of your friends because he or she is really bad at reading and writing and you noticed that recently he/she has started to sit alone. You even noticed tears in your friend\s eyes on a couple of occasions. 

b) Go to Google Docs and write a letter to the bully, explaining why their behaviour is inappropriate. Make sure you review your spelling, grammar and punctuation.  

FINAL TASK:

Choose ONE of the following: 

a) Create a short story on one of the issues we've discussed (i.e. gender roles, stereotypes, body image etc.). Your story must include a problem and solution. Be creative.

b) create a blog with appropriate question and answers (8-10 question and answers).

c) In a group of 3-4, create a 3-5 min short clip on one of the issues we've discussed (i.e. gender roles, stereotypes, body image etc.). Your short clip must include a problem and solution.
