What is a narrative essay?

  • A narrative essay tells a story.
  • It does not have to be a true story or based on your life/experience.
  • It can be written from any perspective.

Consider the following when writing a narrative essay:

  • The story must have a strong storyline and be convincing even if it is fiction.
  • Make use of dialogue and direct speech.
  • Introduce the characters to the reader.
  • Make the setting known to the reader.
  • A narrative essay is usually written in the past tense.
  • Written in 1st person or 3rd person speaker.
  • The sequence of events has to be coherent.
  • The introductory paragraph should capture the reader’s attention.
  • An unusually interesting ending gives a story the final touch.
  • The reader’s interest must be maintained until the end. The style, rhetorical devices ad action must ensure sustained interest.
  • A successful narrative vividly highlights sensory details such a sight, sound, taste, smell and tactile sensations.
  • A narrative essay often has a strong descriptive element.

Good- 3

Satisfactory- 2

Spelling; punctuation and grammar

Learner has less than 2 errors in their spelling; punctuation and grammar.

Learner has 3 to 4 errors in spelling; punctuation and grammar.

Learner has 5 spelling; punctuation and grammar related errors.

Learner has more than 5 spelling; punctuation and grammar related errors.

Word choice

Learner uses outstanding word choices to apprehend experiences.

Learner is capable of expressing their clear feelings by using nouns; adjectives and verbs.

Learner needs to use more nouns; adjectives and verbs in order to create a clear picture and understanding for the reader.

The learner overuses their words and do not create a clear picture for.

Ideas

Learner makes use of details to make the story exhilarating.

Learner creates an engaging story, however more details are needed.

The details does not relate to the story. The learner has too many experiences.

The writer makes use of little to no experiences and focuses on too many experiences.

Organization of essay and structure

The organization and structure makes the essay enjoyable and effortless to read.

The organization and structure is well organized; transitions are helpful.

Needs to make use of more transitions. Order of events needs to be corrected.

The order is unclear. Shows no organization.

Voice

Learner’s voice creates and interest in the story. Learner uses dialogue in the story.

Learner’s voice creates an interesting story. Learner has to make use of more dialogue in the essay.

Learner’s voice is weak. Needs more dialogue.

Learner’s voice shows few to no interest.
