How Students Learn

Introduction

Have you ever noticed that some students learn better by doing things, while others learn by watching or thinking things through? There isn’t just one way people learn, and that’s where learning theories come in.

In this WebQuest, you will explore three major theories used in education: Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism, and Social Cognitive Theory. These theories help teachers understand how students learn and how to teach in ways that actually work.

By the end of this activity, you will be able to explain each theory and apply it to real classroom situations.

Task

For this assignment, you will work in a group of 3 to create a presentation.

Your group will:

  • Research the three learning theories
  • Explain each one in your own words
  • Compare how they are similar and different
  • Give real-life classroom examples
  • Decide which theory you think is most effective and explain why
Process

Step 1: Assign Roles

Each group member will have a role:

  • Researcher: Finds information and takes notes
  • Designer: Creates and organizes slides
  • Presenter: Leads the explanation during presentation

(All members should still help each other.)

Step 2: Research Each Theory

Use the following websites:

Write down:

  • Definition
  • Key ideas
  • Important terms
  • Examples

Step 3: Understand Each Theory

  • Cognitive Psychology: Focuses on how people think, process, and remember information
  • Behaviorism: Focuses on learning through rewards and consequences
  • Social Cognitive Theory: Focuses on learning by observing others

Step 4: Compare the Theories

Create one slide that shows:

  • Similarities
  • Differences
  • Which one focuses on thinking vs behavior

Step 5: Apply to Real Life

Include at least one classroom example for each theory:

Examples:

  • Behaviorism → Rewarding good behavior with stickers
  • Cognitive → Teaching students problem-solving strategies
  • Social Cognitive → Learning by watching a teacher model a task

Step 6: Create Your Presentation

Your presentation must include:

  1. Title Slide
  2. Cognitive Psychology Slide
  3. Behaviorism Slide
  4. Social Cognitive Theory Slide
  5. Comparison Slide
  6. Opinion Slide (which theory is best and why)

Step 7: Present

Each group member must speak during the presentation.

Evaluation
Category 4 - Excellent 3 - Good 2 - Basic 1 - Needs Improvement
Content All theories clearly explained and accurate Mostly accurate Some missing info Incomplete or incorrect
Organization Very clear and easy to follow Mostly organized Some confusion Hard to follow
Creativity Very engaging and creative Some creativity Limited visuals No creativity
Participation All members participated equally Most participated Uneven work One person did most work
Conclusion

After completing this WebQuest, you should have a better understanding of how students learn in different ways.

Think about this:

  • Which learning theory fits you the most?
  • How can teachers use all three theories together?

Learning theories are important because they help teachers create better lessons and help students succeed.
