How To Read Sheet Music

Introduction

Have you ever wanted to play or write music? Well if you haven't, bye. But if you have, then this is the WebQuest for you! This will be a basic overview of how to read notes, time signature, treble/bass clef, and symbols.

Task

first off, the time signature. This decides how many beats are in a measure, and which notes are counted as a beat.

We will only be learning 4/4's today. the top number, 4; means there is 4 beats per measure.

The bottom number, indicates the value of a note. A four for example, means one single note worth one beat, is a quarter note, or a fourth of the measure.

so 4 quarter notes are counted as 1, 2, 3, 4. Stopping four times. It stops at four because there are only four beats in a single measure. Then, it repeats. 1,2,3,4. Etc.

Next up, half notes. Half notes are worth half the measure, or two beats. So they are counted as 12,34. Only stopping once.

Next, a whole note. these are simply the entire measure, or 1234. Same speed as the quarter notes, but you don't stop at all.

Eight notes are a little more confusing. Since it is a eight of the measure, you count it as 1,and,2,and,3,and,4. Stopping you guessed it, 8 times.

You can mix and match them, but that's where it gets very complicated.

There is also a rest. It is the same as the notes, but you play nothing. There are quarter rests, half rests, whole rests, and even eight rests. This is all you'll be learning about this topic at the moment.

Next up, playing actual pitched notes. Were gonna start on treble clef, then move to bass clef.

TREBLE CLEF-

There are two clefs, bass and treble.

Treble follows a EGBDF for the lines and FACE for the spaces.

(The higher up on the scale, the higher the pitch/scale.)

Bass follows a GBDFA for the lines and ACEG for the spaces.

Bass playes lower notes and treble plays the high ones.

Heres how to play them!
