How Do We Learn? The Question to Discover Our Brains Superpower!

Introduction

Ever wonder why some students behave differently than others in the classroom? Why some are pushed by rewards, while others rise on solving challenging problems?

Welcome to our quest to uncover the secrets of how all students learn differently!

Here are three videos that will give us an insight on Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism, and Social Cognitive Theory.

Task

Our task today is to explain and compare Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism, and Social Cognitive Theory.

You will be put into groups of 4. Your task is to work together to discover three ways people learn differently.

1. By thinking and remembering

2. By getting rewards

3. By watching others.

After discovering the three different ways, you will make a “Learning Poster” to show and tell what your group found out.

Each member in the group will have a special job:

1. Memory Master: this person will learn how people think and remember. (This follows cognitive psychology)

2. Reward Reporter: this person will learn how rewards help people learn. (This follows behaviorism)

3. Helper Watcher: this person will learn how people learn by watching and repeating others. (This follows social cognitive theory)

4. Writer and helper: This person will write the details needed for the poster and help the others with all three learning ways.

Process

STEP 1:

Now it’s time to learn our roles. Let’s watch a short video on how each learning style is different.

* For Memory Master:

* For Reward Reporter:

* For Helper Watchers:

- For Helper Watchers: this video is a read aloud! Follow along and do what the book is telling.

STEP 2:

Now that you have watched all the videos discuss with your group! As you all are discussing the writer and helper in the group will write down the main topics in the discussion.

*Questions to discuss:

1. What was your favorite part?

2. How do you learn best?

STEP 3:

Now it’s time to make your posters!

You will need the following:

* Markers

*Crayons

*Glue

*Poster board

On the posters, title it “How We Learn”  have at least 3 pictures on it ( one for each way of learnig). Make sure to provide a sentence for each way of learning.

STEP 4:

Let’s Present!! Let’s share to the class what we learned with this activity.

TOOLS:

* Poster booard

Crayons, markers, scissors, glue

*Youtude video (Safe for Kids)

Evaluation

Rubric
Category 3-  Great Job! 2- Almost there 1- Keep  Working
Teamwork worked well with friends and listened Worked decently with others in the group Had trouble working in the group
Learning Poster has all 3 learning ways pictured and a sentence for each. Has 2 or less learning ways pictured and 2 or less sentences for each Had no pictures on poster and no sentences
Speaking & Sharing Spoke clearly for all students to hear and explained ideas Spoke but needed some help to understand Didn’t speak
Creativity & Effort Poster was colorful and neat Poster was okay Poster was messy and or not complete

Conclusion

Wow look at all you know now about the different learning ways! Some people remember things in their head, by rewards, and others by just simply watching and repeating others. Now that you know the different learning ways, how do you learn best?

This webquest was created as a part of an educational psychology project to help young students explore how everyone learns in different ways.

It is aligned with the INTASC Standards:

* Standard #1 Learner Development: The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.

* Standard #2 Learning Differences: The teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards.

* Standard #5 Application of Content: The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues.

* Standard #7 Planning for instruction: The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross- disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context.

* Standard #8 Instructional Strategies: The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.

Also a special thanks to YouTube for providing the helpful videos for our students to dig deeper into the three learning ways.

How Do We Learn? A Quest to Discover Our Brain’s Superpowers!

This Webquest was designed to introduce second grade students the basic concepts of how people learn. The goal is to build foundational understanding of the learning styles, Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism, and Social Cognitive Theory, to promote appreciation of different ways people learn.

Grade Level: 2nd Grade

Subject Areas: Science of Learning, Social-Emotional Learning, Early Educational Psychology .

Learning Objectives:

INTASC Standard #1 Learner Development: The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.

Needed Materials:

* Poster Board

* Art supplies

* Educational videos (YouTube or YouTube Kids)

Teacher Instructions:

1. Use a class discussion to introduce the concept of different ways we learn.

2. Give each student one specific role (Memory Master, Reward Reporter, Helper Watcher, Writer/Helper).

3. Use the included videos and process outline to guide students through the webquest.

4. Help students in anyway in creating and presenting their learning poster.

5. Follow the rubric to assess teamwork, understanding, and creativity.

Assessment: A 4 category rubric will evaluate group collaboration, presentation skills, creativity, and understanding of the learning theories.
