A Host of Heroes

Introduction

Hello Hero Hunters!!  In this Webquest, you will learn about the monomyth, the four types of heroes, and explore some examples of each.  By the end, you will create your own hero with his or her own story and monomyth.  Let's get started.  Remember to have fun!

Task

One of the first things to learn about heroes is the journey.  Every hero has one.  The Monomyth is a theory developed by Joseph Campbell that all heroes follow a certain path, or journey.  Please watch the two videos about the Hero's Journey.

Video 2 - The Hero's Journey

Next, analyze the 17 stages of Joseph Campbell's Monomyth AND read about the 12 stages of the Hero's Journey by Christopher Vogler (adapted from Joseph Campbell's Monomyth).

Now that you know the Monomyth and how it works, you need to check out the Monomyth Graphic Organizer.  Pick your favorite movie, novel, or T.V. show and fill out the chart over one of the main characters to see if he/she fits into the Monomyth.  This completed chart should be uploaded to our Google Classroom link.

Next, learn more about the four types of heroes.

The Romantic Hero - Follow the instructions.  Since we no longer are using E-learn, your journals will need to be completed on Google Classroom.  Click here for the Romantic Hero journal topic.  Upload on Google Classroom.

The Tragic Hero - Follow the instructions.  When you get to the Tragic Hero chart, you will need to use this link as you no longer have access to Smart Notebook files. Upload on Google Classroom.

The Epic Hero - Follow the instructions.  If you choose to do the video of Odysseus, then use this link. Here is the chart for the Epic Hero.  Upload your finished chart to Google Classroom.

The Anti-Hero - Follow the instructions.  Here is the chart you will need to complete the assignment.  Upload your finished chart to Google Classroom.

Your journey is almost over!  Click the Process tab for your final assignment.

Process

Your journey has led you to your final assignment.  You will create an original hero that follows the Monomyth chart. You will need to decide what type of hero you want to create and his/her story.  You will need to create a visual representation of your hero and submit a completed Monomyth Chart.  (PDF Version here).  In addition, you will need to portray the hero's story in multimedia format.  This can be a video, photostory, comic, narrated children's book, etc.  Links to many of these resources can be found below.  If you would like to complete your story in a format not listed, it needs to be pre-approved by your teacher.  You may submit your final projects either through Google Classroom or by a flashdrive.
