Hope is the thing with feathers. WebQuest by Mr R. Fredericks

Introduction

Greetings students, I hope you are well – rested and ready to start this new term with energy and excitement.

As I have said before, this term we going spend a lot of time on the creative side of English (my favourite).

We will cover topics such as poetry, creative literature, and even script – writing.

I am definitely looking forward to this chapter and am very keen to see what hidden talents my students have in store for me.

I wish you the best of luck and most importantly, HAVE FUN!.

Task

In this webquest, we will be focussing on poetry, specifically, the poem “Hope is the thing with feathers”.

Poem:

Instructions:

Read the through the poem about 2 or 3 times, whilst making notes of your own to help you get proper understanding of it.

Then, I want you to analyse the poem by using the Four Square method.

This will help you differentiate between the different sections of a poem, which will ultimately help you get a feel for what the poet is actually trying to say.

And lasty, I would like you to create a poem of your own. In terms of theme, you have complete freedom. Your poem can literally be about anything.

The only thing I want from you is to ensure that your poem consists of a minimum of 3 stanzas.

Process

Analysing a poem.

Analysing a poem requires one to look at every word and poetic style with extreme attention to detail. There are reasons why poets use certain words in certain ways. All of these bits and pieces come together bring about a point or emotion, and that is why poetry is… well poetry.

Creating a poem.

After you have learnt the importance of theme, word choice and parts of speech in a poem, I’d like for you to give it a go and show me what you are capable of. This is the perfect opportunity for you to dig deep and express yourself without wondering about “colouring inside the lines”, and just CREATE.

Conclusion

Creating this as a means of educating learners via different platforms was a complete delight. It was refreshing to create a lesson plan that was not based off your simple day – to – day classroom activities.

I feel lessons of this sort will be received better by learners since it only focuses on what they need to learn and helps them get straight to the source that they would need.

The cons however is that it might invite laziness since learners are not really required to go out and look for their “answers”.
