Historical Figures of the Civil War

Introduction

Hello Students! This project is based off of the civil war, which is sometimes referred to as the war between the states. Some states wanted to leave the US while other states remained loyal to the us. The main cause of their dfferences was slavery. Many outstanding individuals were leaders throughout this time, each having their own point of view and beliefs about the war and what was happening.

For this project you will be learning all about historical figures and generals of the civil war and that time period. You will use the resources provided in order to write a speech that gains support for that historical figure’s ideas.

Make sure to transform as much information as you can about your historical figure and create a voki that displays all of your knowledge on your selected individual.

Have fun and do your best !

Task

  • You will choose a general or another historical figure from the Civil War to research.

  • You will then research the person you chose creating a graphic organizer to note ideas/information about the person.

  • Once you have the research, you will need to create a voki of your Figure  and create a speech to gain support for their ideas and beliefs for the stance/side on the war.

Process

Day 1:

  • You will look at models of biographies of historical figures as well as speeches written by prominent people in history.

  • You will choose a historical figure you would like to learn more about. https://guides.lib.jjay.cuny.edu/c.php?g=288398&p=4496619

  • You will do research- using the web or books we have in the classroom.

Day 2:

  • You will create a graphic organizer planning out the details of your historical figure’s life and accomplishments.

  • You will then create a Voki character that resembles the historical figure you have chosen.

  • You will summarize the ideas and beliefs of your historical figure and then create a speech using these ideas in order to gain support.

Day 3:

  • You will finish your speeches and present to the class.

  • After each student has presented their Voki along with their speech, the class will vote on whether or not they would have agreed with/followed this particular historical figure and will explain to the presenter how they made their decision.

  • Your Teacher will use the rubric provided to assess you - make sure to have everything included in your project that is listed on the rubric.

Conclusion

You have now worked your way through the entirety of this project. Our last step is to vote on the voki character and speech that was most persuasive. Which one made you want to follow them and have them as your leader through such a difficult time?

Challenge:

I challenge you to think about the time we are living in now and reflect on how we live in such a diverse world. Think about how our lives would be different if this war wouldn’t have happened. Would our lives be better or worse? You tell me!
